Who was the better heavyweight : Michael Moorer or Ray Mercer ?

Moorer was vastly superior imo

 

Can I just say something before anyone else says anything?

 

It's too bad they didn't fight.

They were supposed to.

When Mercer was WBO Heavyweight Champion, Moorer was his #1 contender. Mercer vacated rather than face him, because Ray's team wanted him to fight Larry Holmes instead. So, Mercer fought Holmes, and he lost.

Moorer won the vacant title against Bert Cooper, but had to get off the floor twice to do it.

Moorer confronted Mercer about it on USA's Tuesday Night Fights. Mercer said he'd preferred to have fought Moorer, because Holmes was an old man. But he was just doing it because his managers wanted him to.

If they fought in 1992, like they were supposed to, I think Ray probably wins. Moorer hadn't been a heavyweight that long.

But Moorer got more comfortable against bigger guys the longer he remained at the bigger weight and racked up another 30 wins or so post 1992. Whereas, Mercer was really hot and cold.

As with most fights, they both had their own strenghts and weaknesses so it just comes down to when they fought.

 

Michael Moorer. He was better technically and accomplished way more at HW than Mercer ever did.

 

Moorer would have boxed Mercer's ears off until the caveman landed his one big shot of the fight and turned Moorer's face inside out.

 

Moorer would probably beat Mercer after getting off the floor
