Would you give any fighters pre 1920 a good chance at being champion today?

Watch the Johnson fight. He crouches so low his head is below Johnson's belt.

 

The counter point is that when he fought bigger guys they usually didn't last as long.

 

But they were not the most proven that he faced.

 

For maybe 30 seconds of 20 minutes worth of action? This low crouch was just a change up not a standard.

 

Greb's biggest challenge fighting in this era would be not dying from boredom due to inactivity.

 

Langford, Gans, Dempsey (most of his best scalps were from before 1920 anyway), Leonard, Gibbons, Klaus. Hard hitting, durable guys with good speed like Fitz and McGovern would find their ways to a belt as well even though they're hittable. I feel like other greats don't have as much of a certainty due to a lack of quality film.

Cream of the crop then would be amongst the cream of the crop now.

Drop someone like Joe Gans into now and he's quickly getting spotted for his talent and qualities by coaches, promoters, S&C coaches, etc., then gets guided towards a world title just like anyone else now.

I've never really understood these kinds of questions.

There aren't really any real rules for capitalising titles and nicknames and whatnot. Not hard and fast ones. When I'm hard, I tend to be fast, but that's neither here nor there on this subject.
