It’s gotta be done every 4-5 months it seems, it’s a forum tradition. Also, Patterson is in the same situation Marciano was here, it’s Patterson from when he first challenged for the title, against the same Walcott who defended against Marciano in the 1st fight. Who wins this matchup?
I think Walcott moves around and uses his craftiness to score points and maybe get a knockdown to win a UD. Walcott was still in good form against Marciano (first fight) but his biggest mistake was trying to KO Marciano early because it helped tire him out (which slowed him down in the later rounds). Patterson doesn't have the combination of stamina and power that made Walcott go for the early KO. With Patterson he boxes and waits for openings to land his left hook. I do think though that Patterson could surprise Walcott for the first couple of rounds but it goes downhill for Patterson quickly once Walcott figures out his peek-a-boo style.
Walcott gets a ton of love on this forum in large part because of his dazzling footwork and style. But Patterson was the faster and better fighter and the more consistent winner. Floyd was, or would've been very tough for anyone of the 1950s or '60s not named Ali or Liston.
