When did Eddie Chambers get great?

Different eras, duh. Chambers got served to a peak Wlad. Byrd also got his ass kicked by Wlad (twice!).

 

There is nothing to understand. Chambers was a far cry from "great."

 

I don’t recall anyone ever calling him “ great. “ but I do feel he was “ good”. He posted wins over ranked fighters in Calvin Brock, Sam Peter and Alexander Dimetrenko. Retired with a pretty good record

 

I’m sure going to Germany and beating a peak Dimitrenko is just as hard as doing it against a torn rotator cuff Vitali.

 

Its really because he's a win on certain fighters records that certain posters love so it fluffs up the records.

 

It’s amusing that you pulled out a shot Holyfield with a ripped shoulder to bolster Byrd’s resume.

Im also pretty sure post Lewis Tua wasn’t much better than post Vitali Peter.

Yes Sam Peter had just lost to Vitally Klitschko, before Eddie Chambers beat him.

However before Peter lot to Vitally, he had been the WBC Champion, and the #2 Ring Magazine Contender (there was no champion and Wlad was #1).

So yes this was a very significant win at the time.

In his next fight he beat Alexander Dimitrenko, and hindsight is a wonderful thing, but Dimitrenko was highly touted at the time.

Some people were honest to God saying that he might be the next big thing.

So yes I do think that Chambers was a top contender of the era.

 

I understand your meaning but please remember that the context is that this was the worst heavyweight era ever. Beating those guys made him top for his time.

 

I feel like the division bottomed out a little before. Like in 02,03,04,05. Thats the period you're really describing. And things were certainly in a upswing from 2006-2007y times.

Very nice resume and he beat Samuel Peter, Alexander Dimitrenko and Derric Rossy.

He put up a better fight against Klitschko than Pulev, Jean-Marc Mormeck, Francesco Pianeta, and Ruslan Chagaev. He's a solid continental fighter, even a bit world class, certainly superior to Charles Martin, Bermane Stiverne... His greatest strength lay in his ability to maintain distance, his quick hands, and his combinations. Unfortunately too short for a Heavyweight, with not too much power and a bad period.

As far as this thread goes, Chambers is no Chris Byrd.

 

The era that Chambers fought in lacked depth - so I don't see anything surprising or wrong with the fact that He's mentioned as one of the better wins for guys like Wladimir or Povetkin.

Eddie had his limitations, He was undersized and I don't think his conditioning was ever was it should be, but He was an excellent defensive fighter with very fast hands. For what his era had to offer, He was a top contender.
