Whyte and Chisora are not solid benchmarks in what were pedestrian performances, at best, in which Fury dragged his feet as part of generally downward trend towards the Ngannou debacle.

The Vitali that Lewis fought was far more dangerous than the Fury that Usyk fought.

 

Fury was nowhere close to his prime and came off a hilariously bad performance against an mma fighter, and Usyk won a split decision against an older Fury. This is recency bias

 

Chisora was nowhere near his prime either.

Joshua, too, was a few years past his best wins (pre-Ruiz Jr.) and, in any event, it turned out that AJ was a new breed of heavyweight who wasn't a 12-round fighter.

Vitali never showed that he was world championship level prior to that fight whatsoever

I think Joshua and Dubois were prime, but they aren't as good as people believe them to be. Wardley is going to absolutely smoke Dubois and prove both him and aj were always overrated i can't wait

It’s clear Fury didn’t take that fight seriously. He’s fought at a higher level before and was sharper vs Usyk.

Saying he was ‘nowhere near’ his prime is a bit much, he was closer to prime than the Holyfield and Tyson that Lennox fought. And the split decision was just corruption, there’s no way to give Fury more than four rounds in either fight.

 

It's an imaginary one. When Quarry fought he was a legitimate high ranked heavyweight and he fought in the division that had ZERO top end weight restrictions. It was open to all weights. People weighing 220-350 and above were all welcome but none of them were good enough to beat the smaller studs of the day. Usyk's work at cruiserweight wasn't against guys with no weight restrictions, they were capped. In Quarry's day the division he fought in was uncapped. Same with Marciano. Not even remotely the same with Usyk.

He is now fighting in the uncapped division. He has had 8 fights in the uncapped division. His record at heavyweight is 8-0.

 

Was he ? He abused his body for a couple of years during his hiatus, scored his career best win 9 years beforehand and was about 35 when Usyk fought him. Usyk was older but Holyfield has a far superior resume to Fury it's not close, he's a true great and beat Moorer in the rematch a year before, Tyson looked near shot and i agree that Fury was in much better form, but even Mike has a far superior resume to Fury so that counts for something. Usyk made the big difference against Fury in round 9 and closed stronger, but Fury won at least 4 rounds, many had him winning 5

 

Regardless of how the fight ended up being made, Vitali was Lewis's WBC Mandatory and had been for some time. Moreover, he'd been training for a bout on the Staples Center card anyway.

Another way of looking at it might be that Lewis demonstrated his championship class by weathering the storm and turning the tide. Vitali, against Lewis, came to fight and win. He had youth and hunger on his side, and he knew that Lewis was ready for the taking. That he failed to do so, due to his lack of elite level experience, didn't make him any less dangerous while he was in the fight, and it says as much about the level of Lewis as it does about the limitations of Vitali.

The version of Fury that Usyk faced, by comparison, was still a big lump, but one of reduced capacity. He'd had always been conservative in his output but he was also by now showing signs of poor punch resistance as well. It would be fair to speculate that even the "fat shot" '03 version of Lewis would have had quite an easy time of it against Fury '24.
