But I'd say it does matter how that weight is partitioned and whether it's fat or muscle. It's muscle that generates movement. That's what generates the force needed to produce acceleration, in this case the acceleration that ends up with a fist on someone's chin. The fat just comes along for the ride.

Everything else being equal, more muscle makes for harder punches, because muscle is the only tissue (apart from a bit of elastic recoil from tendons etc) that can generate force. If you had two boxers with exactly the same technique and biomechanics but one carries another 10kg of lean mass, the heavier guy will hit harder. If you had a third who carried 10kg of extra fat... dunno, my guess is he'd fall somewhere between the two.

Back to Ruiz, he was 122kg when he fought Ortiz and looks to me at least 30% body fat, which makes his lean mass about 85 kg. Whereas Joshua - just as an example - weighs say 115kg at maybe 9% bodyfat, for an LBM of 104 kg. I know that's an apples-to cheeseburger comparison, but it's just to emphasise that in comparison to some bigger boys, Ruiz has not got a huge amount of LBM to generate knockout force. Like another poster said, he's a natural LHW.

 

AJ's more around 12-13% bodyfat. If AJ cut down to 9% he'd probably weigh 225-230 lb.

If Ruiz cut down to cruiserweight he would lose lean mass and (maybe) some bone density as well.

LHW for Ruiz sounds extreme...

 

He punches hard. And he's hurt most of the fighters he's faced. He just isn't a good finisher.

Even against Joshua, it was more of a case of Joshua quitting than Ruiz KOing him.

Some guys can hurt people, they just don't have the wherewithal to land the coup de grace.

It's a skill.

 

I did answer it, “too fat and not enough cardio”. If was Andy was in better shape he could chase the KO more, now he just do the bare minimum.

 

I like Ruiz but he don’t have power.

 

It sounds extreme until you see someone over 3 inches taller then him make 154!
