Don't care too much that people take them but it should still be banned and enforced or well end up with Bane in boxing taking every drug under the sun. I'm interested to know the details about how certain fighters have managed to bypass failing tests when it's pretty certain in my mind that they have a PED regime.
They all micro dose now. It's so easy and efficient to do. Gone are the days of taking a ridiculous Evan Fields stack, year round blasting and having 6000ng test like Jones Jr. You can literally micro dose a ped like EPO the night before a test and still pass. Not to be rude but some on here are very out of the loop on how the protocol has changed nowadays. Well done, it's basically undetectable. I would say consistent EPO + HGH micro dosing is the minimum of every top fighter nowadays, especially high work rate fighters at higher weights. Guys like Dennis McCann who get caught on insane amounts of hard anabolics are absolute fools. If you fail a test nowadays it's usually due to stupidity.
I get what you are saying and I have asked when "weight bullying" and PED's come up. What the difference between a guy taking a PED to increase endurance and someone training at high altitudes or sleeping in a hypebaric chamber. In my opinion, it's still a fighter trying to gain an advantage over their opponent. Also, if the majority of fighters are using PED's how much of an advantage do they have?
To be fair, in the warning I meant to say that I do NOT condone PED use in the sport. I’ve edited my post to fix that. However, all I’m saying is this: either have strict testing with lifetime bans, or don’t test at all like in the 90s. I’m tired of seeing boxers who are obviously on steroids continue to compete, while others, usually fighters who are either less wealthy or less careful, get caught and punished. Right now, the system isn’t fair. Cheating by using PEDs is oftentimes just leveling the playing field.
How is training at a high altitude comparable to PED usage? The difference between the two is one is illegal and also unethical, as it PEDs give the fighter an unfair advantage, while if a fighter is training at a high altitudes, How is training at altitude comparable to PED usage? PEDs are illegal and give the fighter an unfair advantage, while if a fighter trains at altitude, nothing prevents his opponent from doing the same.
I agree with basically everything in this post. We’re past the days of “Evan Fields” cycles. However, random, year round testing would catch more low key cheaters who microdose. It wouldn’t eliminate cheating entirely, but the threat of constant testing would deter many fighters. You’d still have cheaters, even in a perfect system, but it would make it much harder to get away with it. Right now, most commissions still only test on fight night, which basically means everyone can get around the system, so what is the point with testing for PEDs?
Everyone at a certain level is using PEDs, just like at a certain level you can afford expensive high altitude training camps. Also, to quote @Braindamage : “If the majority of fighters are using PEDs, how much of an advantage do they really have?”
Well, some PED's help with recovery and stamina, same thing training at altitude does. I'm sure you and many others on here are more knowledgeable than I am on the subject, but it seems that a lot of the PED's fighters get caught using help with stamina and recovery. I am not sure if there are PED's that help with making a guy faster, capable of making them more punch resistant or hit harder. But, if most fighters are on the juice, is there really any advantage? By the way, I don't condone using banned or illegal PED's, just playing devils advocate.
The penalties for testing positive in boxing are a joke and the joke is on the sport itself. Most other sports penalise harshly and appropriately for breaches. Boxing just seems to please itself and for that reason, l often wonder why they even bother testing boxers.
“I am not sure if there are PED's that help with making a guy faster, capable of making them more punch resistant or hit harder” I’m pretty sure that is the basic appeal to use peds. But the unfortunate truth is that it is rife in the sport, and it’s sad to say that it benefits no one by cleaning up the sport.
I remember early in high school kids I knew that were swimmers discovered caffeine. They all started doing faster times. From there on in all of them were looking for some sort of advantage. The behaviour starts young. As far as I am aware and from stories I have been told PED use is rampant at high school/college level in the US and has been for decades. So a lot of young boxers start looking for an advantage from a young age. That doesn't mean they all start taking PED's, but it's just natural human behaviour for some people to seek an edge against the people around them. Unfortunately it's nearly impossible to clean up. But boxing or any combat sport should definitely be doing everything it can to make sure combatants are not using PED's.
How do PED's help with punch resistance? Punching power comes more from proper technique than strength. So, I doubt PED's help with that.
Riakporhe looking particularly juicy at the weigh in yesterday. His traps and shoulders being the main indicators.
