So much of his peak years have been wasted by not fighting, and then the comebacks against substandard opposition.

You could do this to practically every heavyweight, especially when using "outside of x" fights as a yardstick.

I think that is being quite generous to Fury. Over the past decade he could've had some of the below on his CV, but doesn't have any of them:

    - Klitschko rematch
    - Joshua
    - Dubois
    - Zhang
    - Povetkin
    - Parker - I understand why this one hasn't happened.
    - Hrgovic
    - Ortiz
    - Pulev
    - Joyce
    - Takam
    - Ruiz

Probably a few more we could add on.

He could fight someone such as Kabayel now. But we know he won't.

It’s a bit strange how some fighters get endless criticism for “carefully managed” careers, yet in Fury’s case it often feels like a pattern of facing cannon fodder, with a genuine top-level opponent only appearing every few years.

his resume is crap. in 5 years it will be recognized as crap. right now he can still make money for those paid to blow up his resume and skills, and his fanboys who only follow boxing because hes around, will have moved on. he will be remembered more for being a character than for being a top notch fighter.

Yeah after watching the full card last night all the heavyweights that were on the undercard, looked better then the opponent that Fury choose.

That’s hyperbolic. Makhumudov is better than TKV and Clarke.

Would he beat Clarke? Not overly convinced. Would be a competitive fight.

Remember when Fury worshippers were going on an on about how he was the H2H ATG all the time great?
Those were funny times. The Gypsy Clown isn't even top 20!

He's had a lot of time off.
But he fought Wilder x 3 and Usyk x 2, that's five fights. Whyte was the mandatory people pretended he was going to duck.
    That's six 'top' fights.
Wilder tied him up for a few years basically. He tried to get out of the third fight but couldn't. AJ didn't want the fight Chisora took.

As for the other contenders now, where was there time to do them when they meant anything. Fury fought Wilder III, then AJ didn't want the fight, then he went on to fighting Whyte and Usyk.
During that period Dubious hype was halted when he got beaten by Joyce.
Then Joyce got destroyed by Zhang x 2.
Then Zhang got beaten by Parker.
Those fights meant nothing after all that.

Povetkin was on a different path and was done by the time he fought AJ/Whyte, neither ducked the other.
Vitali retired before any fight could happen.
    Haye pulled out twice.

He fought basically all the big ones he could since his obesity. I don't know why people keep pretending he avoided all the big names. That's AJ and Kebabyal and Zhang and Joyce and Parker for years also.

    Usyk x2

    Wilder x3 in America

Fury was the underdog in three of those five fights. Usyk was top 2 for the first fight and No.1 for the rematch, Wilder was ranked No.2 in fight 1, No.2 in the rematch (behind only Fury), and No.3 in fight 3.

Whyte was WBC mandatory and top 5 ranked.

Chisora, Wallin, Makhmudov and Ngannou would be or actually are among Joshua's best wins since Fury's comeback.

Barring Usyk, Fury's record since 2018 compares favourably to anyone else in the division.

Fury went to Germany to fight Wlad. The fighters we talk about with carefully crafted careers like Glass Jaw Roy Jones would NEVER have done that. That’s the difference. Same for China Chinned Glass Jaw Wilder he wouldn’t have risked going to Germany to fight Wlad.

Great. But this thread is talking about Fury's career post Klitschko.

I’m no Fury fan but he hasn’t had a carefully crafted career. He has been willing to travel to fight which someone who is being coddled doesn’t do. The one fight people seem to have forgotten about is Glass Jawed David Price. There was ZERO reason for Fury to have not fought him when both were undefeated Price and his team were willing to make the fight it was Fury who was hesitant for some reason and I have zero doubt Fury would have sparked Price had they fought which makes it even more bizarre.

He has taken *occasional* risks - which he should be celebrated for (Wlad, Wilder) but took lighter touches in between. Yet all the while he - and his fans - tried to convince us he was the heavyweight GOAT. Realistically, Fury has had a very good career. But his inactivity and, at times, wilful avoidance of risk do not put him anywhere near the HW top ten. And shame on those who tried to elevate him there during the peak of this madness.

He had years to face Kabayel, Parker, Hrgovic and Dubois. Could have faced Povetkin anytime from 2012 to 2015. Also years to fight Joyce
Whyte losing to Povetkin didn't prevent him from fighting Fury so why would these guys losing suddenly be a game changer

Moreover why does he want to fight Joshua following the Dubois loss?
