More skilled: James Toney or Terrence Crawford?

A Prime James Toney was great to watch. He had a great combination of hand speed and defense.

 

Perhaps James had an injury. I like to think of myself as the English Duran , if it weren’t for injuries..
Be that as it may, Crawford has beaten nobody. The best fighter he ever beat was Jeff Horn, history says who? What? He beat the shell of Brook, Porter, Prescott and Canelo.
The Canelo win is mildly noteworthy I suppose. But Crawford’s taken over as the most ridiculously overrated fighter of the moment from Usyk.
He was good, but his career isn’t even greater than say, Vito Antuofermo.

If Toney is so much more skilled than Terence Crawford, then why are you so afraid to name a single skill? He certainly doesn't have better feet, a better jab, nor is he even a better counter-puncher. I can't even think of a single punch that Toney threw better than Crawford in all honesty. And yes, I do think I'm being substantially more objective than you are.

 

While Crawford had better feet, Toney had better head movement. For example, Toney had clearly a better right hand than Crawford.

 

I never said that he was so much more skilled.

I said that he displayed his skills against better opponents and more styles.

Based purely on skills there's not too many fighters that will come out ahead of James Toney. His style was a throwback to the great boxers of the 1930s and 40s.
Particularly his upperbody movement.

Crawford is highly skilled himself but he doesn't have quite the defense of Toney. He tends to use his legs more. Terance fought and beat good fighters. Ofcourse when a guy is as dominant as Terance the opposition doesn't appear formidable. Sort of a Roy Jones effect.

James Toney did fight an exceptional caliber of fighters. That again was part of being a throwback type of fighter. He fought everyone often. Sometimes twice.

 

I agree that Toney had better head movement, even though I think Crawford is more defensively versatile overall, he clearly had less of a stylistic focus on slipping and rolling shots to the same extent as Toney, who made it a cornerstone of his style. Toney's straight right as a single shot is a lot cleaner than Crawford's but I think it's arguable that Crawford is better at blending his straight right/left into his offence in terms of using it to set up other shots, working it into combination, or working it as a single shot counter. Essentially, what I'm getting at, and my main reason for saying that Crawford is more skilled, is that Crawford has a broader tool-box to reach into skill-wise than Toney, who was more polished at the things he did, but who clearly didn't do as much as Crawford.

 

Definitely Crawford.

 

I see Toney as more skilled, but Crawford as more effective and adaptable if that makes sense.

 

Toney had better uppercut. Not much else really.

 

This is a case where the era of James was so much better than the era of Terrence.
