The bout was officially declared a draw.
As the Melbourne Sportsman describes, Miller was originally to fight John Thompson, that bout fell through, then there were negotiations with Abe Hicken, but it also fell through. Larey Foley was the third option only. So, saying there were no other claimants in Australia is a bit of a stretch.

"Miller has signified his willingness to meet Sullivan, the American Champion, for 5000 dollars (£1000), and will allow Sullivan liberal expenses to come to Australia."
You can't take this challenge seriously. Sullivan had to come to Australia to fight somebody who had just fought a draw with a middleweight?
