Hearns with that long reach , one of the best jabs in boxing history. Froch , iron chin, Great engine, strong but not physically imposing. The younger man here. Who nails it?
I think the more proven fighter at Super Middleweight in Froch who was tough rugged with a good chin would stop Hearns late after weathering some scary moments. The way to beat Hearns is to come at him aggressively get physical and be brave enough to walkthrough some heavy allitery. I believe Froch has the ingredients to do that. But saying all that whilst Froch has a good chin he was decked by Taylor and Groves. Groves especially notably hurt him with the right hand. So If Groves hurt Froch with a right hand then Hearns especially could drop Froch with a right hand and could possibly stop him. But at Super Middleweight I'd probably make Froch the favourite.
Tommy looks unbeatable untill some one doesn't respect his power and keeps coming. That's literally Froch. This is a guy who walked through bombs from Grove's , went to war with Kessler and thrived in hostile environment s and chaos. He doesn't panic, and doesn't abandon his game plan when hurt.
It would make sense to use the 1987 version of Hearns that jumped to LHW and beat Andries. He carried 175 or close to it well; I'm not sure whether the fight was day before weigh-ins, but probably best to assume that Hearns wasn't cutting to make it. He'd be a decent size comparison for Froch at 168; it's hard getting accurate info sometimes but I don't think Froch was a big weight-cutter at 168, even though he obviously was very strong at the weight. Froch had an exceptional chin, but he also took a lot of shots flush, particularly right hands. Size aside, Hearns would by a distance have the most dangerous combination of speed and power that Froch faced, and it goes without saying what Hearns' money punch was. Given Hearns' speed and accuracy, and Froch's defensive lapses, it's safe to assume that Hearns is going to land that right hand, and probably frequently. You're then in the realm of whether Froch can shrug off a sustained flow of one of the most celebrated punches in boxing history. It's definitely possible, but "Froch has an iron chin and is naturally bigger" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in the keys to victory. Froch has a lot of the physical attributes that could cause Hearns problems, and I understand the argument that he could weather an early storm, rough Hearns up, and stop him late. I just don't think it's the most likely outcome; I think Hearns may well stop him at some point, but even if not I'd fancy Hearns to outbox him down the stretch and not fall apart under pressure.
We say supermiddleweight which would denote the still shaken up vulnerable Hearns whose prime had been short circuited by 2 sudden blows from Iran Barkley and who went life & death with Kinchen and Sugar Ray. The last 2 however he won and without speaking in bad taste he damn well beat Iran Barkley to near death. He also outpointed Olajide but faded late. That was the ' worst ' Hearns...the fighter immediately before and after at Light Heavyweight was a much better Hearns...faster ,confident and with a better chin and capable of fighting 12 hard rounds. The Hearns who beat Andries I see inflicting a similar beating on Froch. The SM Hearns I see fading late and even being hurt but seeing it through to a clear points win. SRL couldnt finish hurt Hearns twice neither will Froch. The 1991-92 Light Heavyweight Hearns will outbox Froch UD. Technically Froch has the pressure fighting recipe to do what Barkley did, both world amateur bronze medalist too but they're different fighters I dont think Froch quite has Barkleys power or need to resort to taking such heavy punishment. Yes he pretty much did that to another big American star Jermain Taylor and lets not forget Barkley for all his inhuman effort won by 1 point . So I go with Hearns. But Froch is now criminally underrated. The Ward defeat unfairly diminishes him.
Most people are going to automatically assume Hearns here cos he an overall greater fighter but his SMW run was very unimpressive .. he fought Kinchen (who wasn't anything special) to a MD, got dropped in it.. drew with Ray whod had 3 fights in 7 years & who wasn't even a SMW & beat Olajide on points.. not that great TBH. I'd actually favour Froch to gut out some hard moments but eventually put it on him...
Carl Froch by stoppage in a war. Froch's size and reach, relentless aggression and durability helps him beat Hearns in a great fight.
Ye fair enough, it's been a long time since I delved into their rivalry.. but Ray wasn't a SMW & was getting on by then.. not that bothered about it TBH but as great as Hearns was Froch is a tough SMW mainstay to beat.. hes more proven at the weight & he can take a shot too.. i can see him gutting out a win over Tommy at SMW
Watching Roldan rock Hearns and Barkley lay him out makes me think Froch would get the job done. Froch made a career out of beating guys who looked like they’d outbox him on paper.
Hearns should be able to outbox Froch..............................but then there's like 7 or 8 victims of Froch that should've been able to outbox him. Froch was the kind of guy that would be a boogeyman to Hearns at SMW (length, reach, chin, power, durability, stamina). All of these things are the things that Hearns struggled with throughout his career. Froch had every single one of them, not one or two but every single attribute. I would lean ever so slightly a Hearns decision while having no confidence in that pick. Ask me the same question next week and I'll say Froch by tko10
Supermiddleweight Hearns was post Hagler, and therefore damaged goods. I could see the Hearns who boxed Kinchen outboxing Froch, but one right hand from Froch could spoil things. Froch takes a count along the way.
Every time Froch threw a right hand, he stepped forward with his right foot and squared up. That is a deadly mistake to make against a fighter with a strong right hand; it nearly cost him the first Groves fight. And he didn't quit doing it. Hearns would certainly figure this out early on. At 168 and where he was at his career, does Hearns have enough to stop Froch? Could he outlast Froch if Froch withstands flush right hands that he literally walks into?
