April 19 1991 28 y/o Evander Holyfield defeats 42 year old George Foreman

Dang, that was 35 years ago. I am really old. Thank you for reminding me of that.

 

That's crazy and a little scary.

 

The best comeback Foreman.

 

I was a couple of months away from being conceived. Thank you for making me feel old too

 

I remember Holyfield getting so much criticism for fighting Both Holmes and Foreman as they were in their 40s and that was deemed ancient! Both guys went on to notch good wins with Holmes fighting another 10years and Foreman fighting for and winning world titles. Holy himself was challenging into his mid-40s!!

 

One of my favorite fights. Super entertaining.

 

That fight was more competitive than I remembered from watching it live. Clearly the pinnacle of comeback Foreman. He looked much better against Evander than he did years later against Moorer.

 

I wasn't even born.

 

It was a terrific fight. Some of Holyfield's combinations were amazing. Foreman's durability became legendary and, in retrospect, Evander's endurance should be noted. He took a lot of low blows and never once complained.

The post fight interviews were charming. George made out that Evander ran from him and was scared then Evander entered stage left. Strange thing to say as he was wearing dark glasses to cover the bruises. If Holy was running away, he was doing some damage first. But it was all good-natured.

Foreman would have beaten a lot of heavyweight champs that night. Holyfield would have beaten even more.

 

Feel old? I was 27 then.

 

Foreman was trying to rough up the smaller man. Rabbit punches, low blows, elbows. A lot of people complain about the modern boxing fan that puts size above all else.. Foreman had that attitude in spades.. more than anybody ever. He was dismissive of little Holyfield. But Holyfield took it easy on him. He hardly threw any punches the last two rounds.

 

At the time I was somewhat disappointed. I wanted to see Holyfield make a statement by stopping George. But over the years I learned to appreciate the fact that Foreman was still a great fighter even then

 

Holyfield didn't run. He took it easy on him.
