Tyson was faster than Ali

Archie more said so in an interview. It may be a slight paraphrase after all these decades, but it was something like, "that boy is the swiftest heavyweight ever, and that includes Ali..."

I disagree. Ali’s hand speed was lightning, even as an older guy. That barrage he landed on Frazier in round 13 of the Thrilla in Manilla was ridiculous for someone who’s had the stuffing beaten out of him for 10 rounds leading in, in stifling heat. Even the pounding he put on Frazier in the 14th was impressive considering how arm weary and exhausted he would have been. Tyson couldn’t produce anything like that speed wise late in a fight. After 6 rounds Tyson didn’t look so fast. Ali always looked quick.

If we're talking speed + power combo though, Tyson is in a realm of his own

 

This is about right. Ali's punches were clearly faster because he valued the speed above all. Tyson blended power with speed; loading up a bit costs you that time.

 

Impossible. Ali was so fast that one time he turned off the light switch in his hotel room and he was already in bed before the room was dark.

 

The problem is that Ali's speed was more regular, the prime of Mike Tyson and his speed was very more short.

So for me Ali is still a better boxer and have a better speed.

It's like to compare the hand speed of Chocolatito with the hand speed of Kosei Tanaka, Tanaka did not last as long at the top level as Chocolatito even if the speed was similar the prime was too short for Kosei Tanaka, in addition the Ring IQ of Chocolatito is definetely too much (it's the same for Ali and Mike Tyson).

And for finish with that I will say that if even Mike Tyson was more fast with his hands and head movement, I will say that the footwork of Ali was far more fast than the footwork of Mike Tyson.

 

Ali was HW boxing fast. Mike was full out athletic fast.

Ali, in the first Liston fight, was faster than Mike ever was; he made Liston look like a total amateur, completely blinding him with his speed. Mike looked fast against limited or over-the-hill opposition. But when he stepped up against the actual elite, the likes of Holyfield, for instance, he didn't have too much trouble with his speed, whereas I think Holyfield would have been hitting air all night vs Ali and would've been peppered with combinations. I don't think there's anything about Tyson that is on Ali's level.

 

Maybe hooks, but if they were both on the Johnny Carson show and were going to see who could catch a fly or reach out to flick a light switch faster who are you gonna put $5 on?
