Again you’re just ignoring the truth. I told you what happened. Mercer was getting whooped and backed up the first three rounds. Hurt in two of them. By a man who was trying to fight small and busy. Why do you deny this simple truth? Mercer didn’t walk through anything that fight

I can see the arguments, solid arguments, for a Mercer win, but this is Marciano we are talking about, truly one of the best conditioned, well trained, and mentally strong fighters ever to have stepped into the squared circle, others have pointed to Rays losses, his shortcomings, they are an aside in my mind, it's not about Mercer, it's about Rocky, fighters like him are born with that burning intensity, that almost insane will to win, KDs, cuts, injuries, matter not a jot to this fighter, this rare type of fighter, I believe Marciano will triumph, he was special, Mercer wasn't, never would be.

Mercer crushes Marciano.

 

Marciano's work rate too much, the pace could cause a late stoppage if a 15 rounder, but my guess would be a dominate UD for Marciano. Mercer was durable but very beatable. Remember Jesse Ferguson.

Another bout where Mercer does not bother to get in top condition for. He'd figure a 190 pounder is nothing to be concerned with and wouldn't do any jogging or rope jumping, would he?

And go ahead and hang around taking a beating > 5 rounds because his gas tank is real low.

 

I think it was more his "Party Boy Gas Tank" that caused him problems. Against Mercer you can watch him tire and lose all defensive responsibility. He's half turned on the ropes not protecting himself, as if he's waiting for the ref to intervene, and Mercer just tees off on an open target, which begins the beautiful collapse.

 

Mercer didn't walk through Jesse Ferguson. He shined against Morrison who was, at best, a bleached blond amateur with a 2 round gas tank; his 'masterful boxing' exhibition against the phenom of ring cutting, George Foreman, notwithstanding. He had solid showings against Witherspoon, another lazy tub of goo, when both were fighting for their futures, and against Lewis. He was desperate then; when he wasn't, who could predict how he would show up?

What about 209 lbs of muscle runs into 263 lbs of muscle, what happened ? Bear easily beat Carnera, that's what, why, because he was the better fighter, just recently we had a thread about smaller/ lighter fighters beating up much bigger fighters, Greb, Walker, Burley, to name a few, beat bigger fighters, in some cases much bigger, why, because they were normally the better fighter, so giving loads of weight away is not a barrier to winning, the better / greater fighter would win, in some cases that would be the bigger, heavier fighter, but its not sancrasant, I think Marciano would beat Mercer because he is the better fighter, by a long stretch, despite the weight difference, just my opinion Steve.

A battle between the rock and a hard face....

 

It's a lot easier to have a high work rate against tiny opponents who have one foot in the grave. Also, do a punch count on the first Walcott fight. There are rounds where Rocky is only getting off 35 punches, not lands, punches.

Can we also remember Don Ceckell? How many Don Ceckells could Mercer beat in 3 rounds?

 

BS Rocky would put punches on him.. like devastating attack. Kind of paralyzing. Stand you straight up (if you were fighting him.. not you) He couldn't cope with Holyfield (CW) and he wouldn't cope with Marciano either. He showed some clownish tendencies against Holyfield. Marciano doesn't clown like Mercer. I'd hate to see Marciano-Holyfield, because Rocky might take it! You know, these classic what if's.. you have to take the mental makeup of the fighters into account.

 

Mercer would have a puncher's chance, but that's all. Marciano likely outworks him and wins a clear decision. Mercer was durable and had an iron jaw, so he likely goes the distance. But he never, even at his best, could match Marciano's nonstop work-rate. And a guy who was not a particularly talented or even hard puncher in Jesse Ferguson twice outworked Mercer, once badly so, and even in the rematch, Mercer barely won a close split, if you even think he did. Heck, 208-pound 7-9-2 Marion Wilson beat Mercer, despite the split gift draw that Mercer got.
