Interesting matchup. They probably should've fought at some point. Watt had more losses when he was younger. Espana lost more when he was past his best. But Watt, to me, beat better fighters. I think Howard Davis would've beaten Espana. It probably goes to a decision. I think Watt edges him.
Another vote for Watt. Just better proven against quality. Still, a really good match-up and not anywhere near a foregone conclusion.
Big Watt fan here. Deceptive puncher and good jab. Doesn´t get enough credit for Howard Davis win. España is dangerous puncher, Watt would struggle early on (as he did in his winning the vacant belt from Alfredo Pitalua) as he´s not the fastest starter but start to grind Ernesto who is hittable. Wouldn´t be surprised if Watt stops him in the last 3 rounds but otherwise a hard fought but clear decision win. This content is protected
If things aren’t going Jimmy’s way, he’ll give Ernesto the ‘Glasgow kiss’ headbutt to open him up. In those days they just called it a TKO if you won on cuts caused by butts.
Right Jab, right jab, straight left hand, wash and repeat as Watts wins a hard fought but unanimous decision over the tough but limited Espana.
