Please explain why this was such a big win. Duran was 33 years old fighting someone almost 7 years younger. Had 5 losses already. Fighting a guy that is more than half a foot taller than him with a 12' reach advantage. Had already been stopped. Was 3-3 in his last 6 fights.

I was 13 days old at the time so I don't understand the sentiment behind this fight.

Wlad over Povetkin of course. Not even close. Did you not see how many hugs Wlad gave Povetkin? That already outshines Hearns' KO over Duran. :nonono

Povetkin is a better win, he was the second best in the division (not counting Vitali). The Duran KO more spectacular. But Duran had been easily outboxed by Benitez and Laing. He'd lose to Sims a year or 2 after too.

Hearns was naturally around 25lbs heavier, and Duran was a pressure fighter.

Wlad and Povetkin were both heavyweights. Also, most would say Hearns was better at 154lbs than Wlad was at HW, whereas would most say Duran was better at 154lbs than Povetkin was at HW?

Sure, Duran is a better name than Povetkin, but was Duran more effective at 154lbs than Povetkin was at HW?

How could Povetkin be effective when Wlad spent the entire fight shoving and pushing him? it wasn't even a boxing match, it was a wrestling match.

Hang on, which one is Duran again? Is he that short, fat guy from Venezuela? Or is that Chavez? Julio…? Hugo…? I don’t know, I don’t really follow boxing much these days.

I’ve heard of Wlad though. I liked him. He was exciting.

No one has clearly stated it but I think many of you are getting ALEXANDER Povetkin mixed up with MANDY Patinkin.

So there is a generation, or two, that doesn't understand how popular boxing used to be in America. Ignorant about it. There was no MMA or whatever. It was all boxing. Hearns-Duran was huge.. Duran just ran with Hagler.. this the fight that made people doubt Hagler could overcome Hearns. THE WHOLE COUNTRY.

If you didn't see it at the time, you don't understand it. This is the classic, If it has to be explained to you, you'll never get it.

Povetkin was a cheat victory. Another ref would have ended that fight and issued Wlad a DQ loss.

    Because Duran was an ATG.

A guy who went on to win a MW title 5 years after, in his late 30’s.

A guy who’d recently taken a prime Marvin Hagler the full 15 rounds.

Why would a win over B level guy, be better for a prime SHW??

A SHW who impersonated an octopus for the evening??

Wlad couldn’t even legitimately beat Povetkin.
