No for answer of the title of the thread you have the example of Omar Narvaez 32th worlds championships and 27th defenses of his WBO belt in Flyweight +Super Flyweight.

But against who ??? I think he have only 3 notables wins on his career Alejandro Hernandez, Felipe Orucuta and Bernard Inom (who was probably better than Brahim Asloum at that period in France).

The statistics are impressive, but when you dig deeper, you don't find much about the Argentinian. Omar Narvaez was one of the best at 112 lbs, probably the third best Flyweight of his beggin period 2002-2007 after Pongsaklek Wonjongkam and Nonito Donaire but after 2007 he was not even in the top 5 in reality in Flyweight with Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, Daisuke Naito, Koki Kameda, Moruti Mthalane, Takefumi Sakata and even Denkaosan Kaovichit.

And at 115 lbs (Super Flyweight)? With Chocolatito, Estrada, Cuadras, Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, Inoue (who beat him), Jerwin Ancajas, Titan Rodriguez, Zolani Tete (who beat him at 118 lbs), Roberto Domingo Sosa, Cristian Mijares,Yota Sato ... he wasn't even in the top 10.


I will not speak when he moved up in Bantamweight, Omar Narvaez was not even a top 30 there... he was very skilled but his career only the number of his defenses and world championships have to be honest nothing notables names in his record (I have only three
names in my opinion).


Champions like Amnat Ruenroeng or Yong Kang Kim for example, with fewer defenses in Flyweight , have achieved more quality than quantity in their careers.

 

Now, to answer the thread realistically, yes, it's possible, but boxers fight much less than before. It's rare for some champions of the era to make three title defenses in a year, and it's also rare, except in the heavyweight division, for a boxer to stay in the same weight class. This often results in an additional loss of time.

 

I reckon if it was 30 defences with vast majority being lineal and undisputed that fighter would probably seen as the clear 3rd best heavyweight but I don't know if people will ever move away from Ali and Louis being 1/2 I think it would take a lot.

Yes. defending a belt should not be confused with defending the actual championship. Not many of the guys Hopkins defended against before he entered the tournament were ranked. Echols and Allen and maybe a couple more.

 

For comparison, Louis's first ten defences included Farr, Pastor, Schmeling, Lewis, Galento and Godoy. All ranked nr 1 or thereabouts. Ali did as good a job cleaning out the top10 with his first nine defences as you can possibly do, This is the standard. Not someone like Wilder who had a lot of WBC defenes but with little quailty.

 

While Monzon and Hagler were the chanpions defensing 14 respectively 12 times for real.

 

Fighters back then had the advantage of essentially drawing the color line though. Numerous formidable black challengers could be ignored that one would be under more pressure to face in other eras.
