Whatever the rights and wrongs of it, Cockell was the Ring Magazine #2 Contender.

That is an eminently justifiable choice.

If there ever were a more damning indictment of an era I have not seen it.

That is a separate conversation in its own right, but my point is that you can't really condemn a champion for defending against a top 2 contender.

It would be like criticizing Usyk for granting a title shot to Agit Kabayel.

Marciano seems to be held to different standard than almost all other heavyweights titlists for some reason. I might do a deep dive of his title defense resume in coming days. Tho his reign was short it's probably close to the gold standard with regards to what ring rated heavyweights he fought.

Don got lucky to get the number 2 he caught a completely uninterested in boxing anymore Lastarza after getting ruined by Marciano. Look at Lastarza for the Marciano and Layne fights then watch Cockell fight look like two different men. Boxing is filled with people in the top ten who shouldn’t be there. I can’t imagine if Marciano fought Stander and Daniels two fights in a row.

Stander would give him a better fight than 50% of the men he beat.

You make a very valid point there.

Do I think that Cockell was a particularly strong #2 contender?

    No not really.

However the fact remains that he was still the #2 contender.

    That is the bottom line.

The thing is, that all eras will have a weak number two pass through. John Tate and Jimmy Young are certainly better than Cockell, but they both reached number two as a ranking in the 1970s. Thad Spencer and Doug Jones made the number two spot in the sixties. These things happen all the time.

So what are we talking about you 50s tags can beat the modern bigger guys or not. Sounds like your saying they can’t unless they were born later and had to use steroids. We would agree yes they need to be bigger or somehow much better. Maybe you need to change them to have had better training and having started earlier you’d get no argument from us there either. We re just saying as you seem now to that that guy as he was 182 186 whatever was not beating a top super heavy of the more modern era.

I don’t have much to disagree with there. I judge a fight if it were to take place on equal footing. Of course PEDs give you an advantage. It’s in the name. But I don’t consider PEDs a skill. Anyone can take them. I judge fights in style first and foremost then add in the attributes. Power, stamina, speed, chin, smarts, ability to adapt, and corner. How does Tyson Fury perform with no steroids in the 50s? Is he even a top ten guy? Or does he lose to much to compete? It goes both ways the argument. PEDs make great baseball players even better as it does boxers. Rocky would only be enhanced like everyone else. That goes for everyone. Ali, Louis, Frazier and all the other greats who didn’t have access to this stuff. For some reason only Marciano gets singled out here because of people’s obsession w him for better or worse.

I have yet to find the PED that makes you longer, taller, better balanced and makes you more fast-twtiched.

Rocky seemed fine in the stamina and brute power departments.

Taller fighters generally have worse balance. As far as fast twitch goes Rocky did just fine in the countering department. Maybe you can elaborate more on that issue because he seemed just fine to me. He was not fast but not slow and had good reflexes.
I recall Holyfield growing several inches in his career. Maybe HGH taken young? Not sure what was around then. But HGH can add height if taken before fully grown. Of course PEDs can make you more explosive as well.

Yes, taller fighters generally have worse balance... unless their name is Rocky Marciano, who had astoundingly bad balance at times despite being a midget.

Rocky did not have handspeed or footspeed. He was clumsy and slow twitch and wound up on every punch. Those punches hurt for sure. And they didn't stop coming. But he wasn't quick between throwing each of them.

Holy grew "several inches" during his career? Are you including his amateur experience here? How much did Vander grow from the age 26, when Rocky started, to 32, the age when Rocky was done? HGH does not make anyone taller after puberty. Are you suggesting that Holy took it as an early and mid teen? Are you suggesting Rocky's T-Rex arms would be longer? And I thought the Marcianistas were always trying to convince us normal thinking boxing fans that his short stature and truncated arms were his super power? You are confusing me here with all your grasping.

I’m not grasping it’s a legitimate question. As he did grow two inches in his career. I know HGH can make you grow if you haven’t filled in your growth plates.
You certainly didn’t prove your fast twitch argument. No video? No breakdowns? Rocky’s balance was only bad when leaping. You can’t have bad balance in boxing and not suffer numerous knock downs. Anyone who’s stepped into ring can tell you that. That’s why it’s the first thing you learn how to place your feet. Beginning of his career he had balance issues not by the end. Otherwise he would have been floored a million times. This isn’t a debate it’s a fact of the sport.
Styles make fights. Marciano, Tyson, Frazier, Qawi all used their height to their advantage by utilizing a proper style. Yes it’s easier for those men to connect off counters because all taller men must drop their guard to punch down. This is well known.
