Because he got KTFO. Not really cowardly to move on with your career and preserve it along with your health, after being beaten so comprehensively.

After that fight it seems he realised his career was in its backend and decided to instead chase a bigger and more significant fight against Fury as a career closer rather than continue trying to regain the belts and fight top guys while being on the decline.

There was NO rematch clause in place for Joshua v Dubois despite Hearns BS saying there was and then he retracted it later,when Warren then offered the rematch to Joshua’s Team they said they could not make the February date for the Saudi mega card event due to injuries so the rematch never happened ,all this is well documented .

 

There was another contextual element. We'd just seen Joyce take the immediate rematch against Zhang and get absolutely splattered. That was a career ender for JJ and a cautionary tale for AJ.

 

Joshua hasn't fought in over a year due to fear, looking for a weaker opponent to look dominant, but he didn't impress even against Paul. Dubois would have completely dismantled him in a rematch. Joshua doesn't have what some fighters like Wardley, Miller and Hrgovic have, which is resilience, and anyone can knock him out...

intended on taking two tune ups before a Fury fight. Tank fumbled the bag against Jake and an opportunity opened up for him to make some money by stepping in for him. After that he was going to fight Rico early this year as his second tune up, but then the crash happened and put everything in doubt. The quality of tune up here compared to the guys he fought in his post Usyk rebuild in 2023 is why I'm thinking he's done trying to work back to a title shot. Just gonna take some easy money fights as tune ups and then the big one against Fury.

 

The quality of these tuneups is also something i can not understand. Fighting Jake paul and a kickboxer to prepare for fury would have been ridiculous.
I understood it in a way with fury coming back down from 300 pounds and mental issues, that he had to have the experience of fighting again. But joshua had a loss against dubois. That's not the same.

Preparing for fury with paul and a non boxer is like preparing for a marathon by running a few rounds in your back yard.

On the face of it, it sounds like misleading the fans. You look good twice and people think you're great. No risk, lots of money.
