Worried about Wardley’s health.

I’m actually wondering what Ben worked on with him in the gym, unless the early success took that out of the window. And to not stop it earlier was irresponsible. Your fighter staggering into a round should be a no no.

 

I thought they should have stopped it at round 6, clear at that point he wasn't giving much back and his face had been caved in. If that were your average Joe they would have been killed. I'd like to see what his brain scan looked like...probably a car crash.

Corner could have called it but failed. Doctor could have called it but failed. Referee should have called it when he stumbled out for that final round...but no. Stupid. 3 points of failure.

 

Fabio is an all time tough SOB, a guy on equal with Jeffries, Sharkey, Johnson, Battling Nelson, the old breed from a hundred+ years ago.

I think people need to be honest about the nature of the sport.

Joyce Carol Oates in her book, On Boxing, has many great quotes. I highly suggest that book. One went something like, Boxing simultaneously celebrates and extinguishes the participants capacity for violence... The more intense the action gets, the more we celebrate. But we must also recognize that, even in the most mundane decision fight, a bit of each combatant is extinguished.

 

Fight should have been stopped much sooner, I expected much more from Wardley than pawing with the left hand and then firing wild amateurish overhand rights that missed by feet not inches. May have been caught up in the big fight moment

 

A brilliant book.

 

I think the fact that Wardley had zero amateur pedigree, started so late, and hasn't really been in there with a puncher up until this point should mean that he's okay. It was still horrendous work by the corner and referee, but Wardley looked more exhausted than hurt, which is a testament to how insanely tough he is.

If he wants to keep fighting, he needs to learn to defend himself properly. He got away with it at the British domestic level, but stepping up to Dubois showed that you can't just block punches with your chin and outman the other guy in a war of attrition.

 

Wardley’s face was messed up but he looked worse than he was due to exhaustion,in the early rounds there was wild miss after wild miss which eventually took a big toll on him but he was getting away with it until Dubois finally listened to his corner and started to use his jab and start boxing,once Dubois listened to his corner he took over the fight . If Wardley is to continue the ideal trainer for his unorthodox style would be Ingle at the Wincobank Gym imo .

 

Looking at a copy right now, next to Liebling's the Sweet Science, Toledo's Gods of War and Murderer's Row. Some boxing books are high literature.

 

Fabio will be fine. In the early to mid parts of the last century fighters were getting these types of beatings all the time and would come back.

Fabio just needs to get a trainer who can teach him how to move, defend and throw different punches.

Way too tough and too much heart for his own good. His corner failed him. The ring doctor failed him. The ref failed him. They all needed to stop it far earlier. This is their job, especially when you have a guy like Wardley, who will fight until he’s carried away on a stretcher.

makes me reconsider what I said about Zurdo quitting. In retrospect, Zurdo was smart, stopped it himself once it was apparent he was done and just gong to take more damage.

 

yeah that’s what concerns me too. Guys getting beat up, sure, not at all uncommon. Guys taking an extended beating from a guy who can hit like Dubois? That’s insane. Doesn’t really happen, because a normal fighter would have been KO’d 5 rounds earlier.
