Ray Mercer V Michael Moorer -1991?

I think I'd favour Mercer TBH.

Moorer at that time was getting himself involved in wars vs Alex Stewart, Bert Cooper, the latter almost finished him in the first 30 seconds.

Moorer has the skills to outbox Mercer but I think at that time Moorer would get lured into a brawl and get stopped.

 

Would have loved to see it. Crowd would have too. I think Moorer could win a decision unless he gets stupid and trades back and forth with Mercer. Even then it would be a good fight

 

I believe Mercer was offered more money for the Holmes fight and a promised shot at Evander Holyfield if he won. From a business standpoint it was the right choice. But yes it’s a shame we never saw him fight Moorer

 

They were both chasing Evander Holyfield as the WBO Heavyweight Title didn't carry as much value at the time.

If Ray Mercer had also actually prepared properly and trained for Jesse Ferguson to get to Riddick Bowe we might have seen a great fight too.

 

I like Moorer here. And I do believe he'll try to get Mercer outta there but doesn't get caught like Morrison did. Unless he tires of course but with Steward in his corner I see a strict game plan. Remember Mercer was pre-prime and had inconsistent performances throughout his career.

 

I'm taking Moorer by UD. I think his jab and combination punching wins him more rounds. Mercer is always deadly but I do think he struggles to establish his jab against Moorer's southpaw stance.

 

Mercer would stop Moorer. He'd probably take a lot and be behind but he's much more durable

 

Moorer for me, I think he was more focused than Mercer at this point.

I personally would have rather seen Holyfield an undefeated Olympic gold medalist in his prime than fight an aged legend on the comeback trail, even if that diminished legend was better. Frankly I think it would have looked better on his resume

 

I'm taking Moorer because Mercer at this time was wildly inconsistent in his preparation and didn't have the elite pop of a Foreman or Tua, nor did he had the output of a Holyfield.

 

This is the correct assessment. Moorer could certainly pick his spots and win on points, but if he tries to slug with Ray he's getting switched off.
