Yes he wanted to work with Lewis from when he'd seen him as an amateur and saw his potential.

Steward is overrated an even more so since he died. He’s very good at picking up the pieces an help already established fighters to readjust an improve parts of their game but apart from Hearns how many great fighters especially heavyweights did his train from the beginning of their careers to all time greatness?

Im wondering if the gym wars at Kronk would have shortened his career on the long run

We should assume Steward's influence would have been broader than the development of Lewis, which could have altered Lewis's trajectory to varying degrees.

That said, I think if memory serves, Lewis was backed by British interests before a trainer was brought on board, and so I suspect the traditional pursuit of British, European and Commonwealth titles would have been in play, regardless of Steward's added presence. It's also likely that Main Events would have still been the US arm of the promotional partnership. If so, I favor that the history in relation to Holyfield and Bowe – at least up to the point of their first fight – would have played out similarly. But, again, Steward's influence may have avoided what happened after Holyfield/Bowe I.

As you allude... ...it's one big 'What if?'

Steward trained loads of good to great fighters from scratch. It was later that fighters were chasing him to pick up their "pieces" and he did a great job with that too. McCrory, Kenty, Hearns, Jimmy Paul, Moorer, all champs from scratch or basically scratch. The jobs he did with Wlad and Lewis were incredible.

What trainers can you name that had more than one all time great from scratch?

What trainers can you name that trained, from scratch, more than one all time great heavyweight?

What trainer can you name that developed more world champions?

Steward is one of the greatest trainers ever.

I always thought Lennox choosing Davenport was debatable. He had lots of guys wanting to train him > olympic gold medal & somehow Davenport gets the assignment. He was an amatuer coach and I thought anyway, not quallified enough for a job of that magnitude.

An olympic heavyweight champ is a moneymaker needing pro polishing. Steward would have been perfect.
