You can say this about a lot of things. Boxing fans just don't do long term outrage over scandals. Whether it be drugs, fight fixing, dirty fighting this community by and large lets things go.

 

Did this actually happen? I thought it was always alleged.

No, he even did it to Frank Dux at the kumite, and that was after some extraordinarily bad taste where he asked the crowd once if he should kill a guy in the ring and then did. And after nearly killing another dude, a big biker, he took that guy's Harley headband and wrapped it around his knee when he was going to fight that dude's unlikely best friend.

The respected writer Jerry Izenberg is sure they intentionally put on on Sonny's gloves. According to Izenberg one of Sonny's corner men that nite told him he had something in a bottle. After the blinding incident he told Jerry he threw it under the ring.
Izenberg didn't see a motive for a false story. I want to say his name was Joe Pollino. Its in one of the hundreds of Ali's documentaries.
Fighters don't often go blind to the extent Ali was for that one round. Dundee was ringside catched heat from the Muslims with Ali. They were sure Ang had to be in on it because he was Italian.
Man boxing used to be entertaining.

Jack McKinney, the Philadelphia newspaper columnist and talk radio host, also claimed that Pollino admitted the skullduggery to him. I don't necessarily believe McKinney but I do have big respect for Jerry Izenberg. I believe he would not invent such a story. But still, it's hearsay.

 

I remember quotes coming up in here by Dundee to the contrary, I'm pretty sure of it.

 

Galento did that and got away with it and he made a career out of horrible conduct. Killen got bitten all over his body. Not disagreeing eye gouging is on another level but you were wondering why it gets "brushed over" and I'm saying the "boxing community" just doesn't hold crimes and/or cheating against fighters.

For better and worse you just don't see the morality police you see in other sports. The fighter either gets punished or they don't and people move on.
