Mayweather fought McGregor with no titles on the line two years after his career proper ended. If you aren't the champion you can fight whoever the you want. The collective isn't effected by your decisions.

If a fighter is the champion everyone in the division is effected by their choices and they have an obligation to not abuse that power. And to give everyone the fair shake they clearly got as they are the champion.

 

I think the ‘experience’ in these match-ups.. Jnr v McGregor, Fury v Nganou, Usyk v Rico, and to a certain extent, Tommy v Jake, get caught up in the extravaganza of these events, and go in, with the intention of ‘playing with their food’ (btw, hearing this all the time now !). So I’d say that, along with a reduced training schedule and the element of unknown, would probably leave most experienced boxers with a lower output on the night. Especially at heavyweight. We see it in other sports all the time. AJ is not the exception. Nganou laid that knockout on a plate for him!

Yes, it was sort of MMA but with a convoluted rule set. Point being that boxers "fighting" or fighting non-boxers has been a thing for a while.

 

I think it's the pressure of the whole Boxing world and media belittling the opponents. Both Fury and Usyk said they took their fights seriously, but I think the magnitude of everything on the line is just too much.

It's insane how AJ could be so calm and collected vs Francis, with all the pressure on him.
