The point of the thread was not that I care so little about it. In fact it's been my favorite sport since I was ten years old. I'm just saying that at the end of the day boxing is two dudes fighting with fists, and if somebody who in his line of profession happens to also kick people for a living instead of just punching them ends up defeating a "pure" boxer, it's not the end of boxing as a sport or the goddamn world.

 

But wouldn't that just mean that they are perhaps a better boxer? Because after all they are still boxing.

 

If Michael Jordan had actually been good at baseball nobody would have said a basketball player can come in and just dominate baseball. They would have said he was a good baseball player.

Kirk, buddy, you are reading WAY too much into this.

For one thing, every MMA fighter trains boxing. It's not going away.

For another, boxing is still the biggest money sport on the planet, and probably always will be.

For a third, Usyk won, and no, there was nothing wrong with it. Rico was knocked down, and not defending himself.

And for a fourth, I think we all saw that it is time for Usyk to hang them up. He's at the point where his skills are erroding and he can't defend against a bigger man with footwork and head movement.

Relax. It was a good fight. I hope some other kickboxers make the jump.

 

The **** you mean? If the referee has decided that a fighter is unfit to continue then he absolutely should stop the fight. Otherwise they are risking the health of the fighter.

 

That stoppage was atrocious.

 

It would have ended as a brutal KO earlier if Rico hadn't spit his mouth guard out.

 

I take less issue with this stoppage than I did with the Parker v Wardley stoppage in terms of the condition of the stopped fighter at the time of the stoppage. Rico was hurt badly and on his way down again.

But the bell had gone, so in terms of timing, this was an awful stoppage. Rico should’ve been given the chance to go to his corner and recoup (more than he already did when his corner was fumbling the rinsing of mouthpiece).
