How would you rate Floyd Mayweather’s chin ?

Hard to really know fully because he was visibly hurt so infrequently. But even the greatest defensive fighters are going to take some hits in fifty professional fights. The right that he took from Maidana was a serious shot. Mosley was one or two good punches away from finishing him, but every boxer has been badly hurt at some point in their career. I would say he had a very good chin. Probably not elite, but at worst a level or two below that.

 

Worse than his eyebrow, not as good as his left shoulder but definitely better than his nose.

His chin wasn't ATG superb - he could be temporarily hurt by huge punchers ala Mosley and Zab but his poise under fire is commendable. His chin is solid - it's not ATG level but like Roy before Ruiz, no fighter spars as much, fights as many fights at amateur, pro, world and champion level without getting hit a few times.

 

Maybe not titanium, but definitely iron. Could get buzzed and did get flashed for an uncalled glove touch KD against Judah. But he recovered extremely well every time he got tagged.

 

Certainly above average. Never saw the full extent of it, but my hunch says Floyd's chin isn't superhuman but rather simply good.

 

He was wobbled by Lomeli quite noticeably. Got rattled a couple of times in other fights (IIRC against Pendleton at one point). He also had excellent recovery.

 

It's a genuinely difficult question.

I am old enough to remember that some people thought that Roy Jones had a very good chin, before Tarver told him to get his excuse ready.

He had a superb chin and excellent recuperation in my book. He fought a vast array of styles and moved a long way up in the weights.

 

It wasn't bad that's all I can say. But at the same time he really wasn't fighting at the weight classes where that is truly tested.

 

We'll never again see anyone fight the roster of talent he fought and get flush-punched so rarely and have so few instances where anyone could even lay it on him by putting together combinations of two or more punches to know how good his chin really was. Anyone who thinks this is purely a function of cherry-picking, as inevitably comes up with him, is deluding themselves past the point of cringe. But, yeah, I can't say it seems certain his chin was as good as Whitaker's just because on the tail end, Whitaker had to prove his chin more. Floyd's chin was at least wood. But yov've got to hit granite and titanium by getting punched more. Floyd...you failed.

 

ATG. The people saying "above average" are insane. He walked into a perfect overhand right, with his chin out, that he didn't see coming, against Marcos Maidana and barely wobbled.

He also took two absolutely massive counter hooks from DeMarcus Corley that would have KO'd and upset most people. They looked identical THE shot Barkley stunned Duran with (Corley is jo Barkley though obviously). I was trying to find the clip of the fight on YouTube but am having no success.

Not to mention the Mosley punch he took which didn't even drop him.

 

A very solid chin, impressive mental faculties under fire, but I don't think we saw him get hit cleanly often enough to truly rate as an ATG chin.

Part of having great punch resistance is being sharp, being in shape and seeing the punch coming - Floyd was one of the very elite when it comes to fight readiness - but we didn't see him showing chin in the same way as we have seen with Eubank, Hagler, Toney, Chuvalo, McCall etc.
