A staple opponent from the 90's and 00's, Montana actually debuted in '88 and finally hung up the gloves in 2016. He went from a super-middle to almost three spins on the scale in his final fights, facing along the way Toney, Jirov, Tua, Hill, Uriah Grant (who he KO'd once) and Kenny Keene (from whom he won the vaunted IBA Cruiser strap). He was one of those road warriors who seemed to be in the results page of every copy of Ring or Flash or Illustrated. Weirdly, he could show real heart in some efforts (vs. Keene) and go through the motions in others (vs. Tua). Thoughts and appreciations welcome.
He fought at a hotel in my hometown in 1997. This was a very early fight card for Thompson promotions, the first one that I was aware of. The venue was 3 blocks from my house. i went to a public workout but didn't see the fight. He fought Cesar Rendon, then fought him again two months later, then fought Keene.
Tough dude that I remember watching on ESPN a few times. He had a few good wins with Uriah Grant being his biggest one. I remember Tua nearly decapitated him when they fought.
