Yeah it wasn't the best Scar I hadn't actually seen a Bonavena fight in years I actually forgot how crude and wild he could be.

I'm watching the Ali/Quarry fights as we speak I'm going to post them in a bit a much more enjoyable performance from Ali even if they were very one sided fights.

Both fights were a total mismatch.

Quarry is a good counter punch but he has quite a short reach.

And his counter punching style against an ATG outboxer with blinding speed and a considerable reach advantage is a terrible stylistic match up for Quarry.

Not much else to say expect these were very good performances from Ali in his 2nd career in fact probably some of his best performances in the 1970s.

What I will finally say is I did like Ali showing some compassion to Quarry in the 7th round of their rematch. Ali waved to the referee to stop the fight as he didn't want to punish Quarry anymore.

In the heat of battle sometimes that is nice to see.

 

Not a fight I watched but I went down to.a nearby bar thats been around a long time and they had a signed tony galento photo wishing them luck and a signed newspaper clipping of chuck wepner knocking Ali down

Normally I abort a fight then and there if a round on the film is omitted, but I was intrigued with this fight after the first 2 rounds of fast combos, so I plugged along. 2 of the judges gave the 3rd to Wright and the 3rd official had it even. If I scored that round for Wright like the majority, I would have had a 115-110 at the end.

I don't know what was with Wright's team signing for this fight. He was so green, had only gone 8 rounds twice and anyone he fought was a journeyman or clubfighter. He didn't belong here at this stage of the game and ended up taking a thumping with 5 knockdowns to a brutally strong champ. They really could have destroyed a good prospect. It showed his heart coming back to the career he had after this disaster.

It was a damn good fight like I said. Sharp combos galore. But I hate these missing rounds.

OK, OK, I had nothing to do and was looking for a gem. Well, this wasn't it, but it was OK. I recall Parkey against Holyfield and his wide-arcing shots. But Ratliff took his time and chopped him down. Again, it was OK but don't go out of your way.

 

Usyk vs Rico

To my surprise I had the fight identical to Mike Coppinger

I know much of the forum had it closer and the Yahoo round by round had it closer but I agreed with Coppigner giving Usyk just 4 and 10

I know some of the posters in the general accused the DAZN team of "being shills" but I think there is a reasonable argument to having Rico well out in front. I tend to score like the real judges but this time I found myself in disagreement

I know the punch stat was close but to be honest Rico's right hand was snapping Usyk's head back and he was coming forward all night which to me points to whose punches are more effective

Plus Usyk had a big 4th round which made the stats closer meaning Rico did better in the majority of rounds at least from a statistical point of view

I didn't watch it live, my reaction from replays and articles was Rico was done and Usyk was robbed of a conclusive KO. Now I am not so sure. Rico may have survived

People are making a big deal of the mouth piece spit, it fell out in the 4th and he spit it out in the 11th. Its not like he was doing this constantly

Others have pointed to the Chavez vs Taylor fight and compare the two but its not even close. Taylor took a very bad beating and had tons of physical damage and accumulation of punishment. Rico was largely unscathed until the the 11th. Rico was doing well in the tenth round prior to Usyk's rally.

Checked out a couple of Veeraphol Sahaprom fights today

Veeraphol Sahaprom v Nana Yaw Konadu (bantamweight title)

I recently started a thread here called 'Rushing prospects'. And this fight could be added to it, despite the fact that the Thai was the champ. I don't care if he was the titlist or that he had a career in Muay Thai. The fact is that he was only having his 5th pro fight and all the laurels can't replace experience. This fight was an explosive blowout. Myself and the 3 officials all had it 10-8 going into the 2nd round due to the Thai dropping Konadu in the 1st. However, he fell victim to a sharp counter by Konadu in the 2nd and that was it.

Veeraphol Sahaprom v Joichiro Tatsuyoshi I (bantamweight title)

This was more like it. This was a more experienced Sahaprom and it showed. I was very impressed. His jab was not a point-getter. It was a weapon. A stabbing, jarring punch that he kept in Joichiro's face that slowly broke him down. The finish was remarkable the way it unfolded against an excellent opponent. Very impressive.

 

Evander Holyfield vs Vaughn Bean

Not a splendid effort by The Real Deal, he didn't look good here, but I think some poeple overstate how bad he was. He was never in the danger of losing the fight and Bean's punches didn't seem to bother him. He had spots where he seemed out of gas, but he seemed to be like that for spots in many previous fights from Moorer I onwards. Competetive fight, but clear a win.

 

Bean was the IBF #1 contender for this after beating absolutely nobody. He did fight to a MD loss to Michael Moorer a the year previous where he was also inexplicably ranked 5 by the IBF

 

I had it 7-3 after 10.

 

I feel the scorecards are as bad or worse than the stoppage.

 

I was at that fight. Huge crowd at the Georgia Dome.

I don’t recall how I scored it, but I know I thought Evander won pretty clearly but didn’t look good in the process. I remember it being pretty dull and Bean being a very negative fighter, risk-averse and happy to avoid a fight to make it the distance rather than trying to actually win.
