Did Riddick Bowe underperform relative to potential?

Of course he underperformed.

 

Bowe had a 2 digit IQ. Perhaps he and Rahman can meet in "two of the stupidest heavyweight champions" fight.

He definitely wasn't tested enough, so we don't know if he underperformed or overperformed. Maybe he actually reached his peak.

I think he fully reached his potential as a fighter for rhe first Holy fight. He simply wasn't ever going to get better than that.

Maybe he could have maintained that level for longer had he been more disciplined...I'm not so sure as the affects of all the head shots had clearly taken a toll.

 

Yes. His career basically ended at 29 years old when he was 40-1(*38-3).

Now given the way boxings moving Bowe's career is going to have a renaissance. He's got 15 very nice wins and what constitutes a long resume has totally changed. Yesterdays "wasted potential" is today's "long and storied career". I think his career compares nicely with a Joe Frazier. But no matter how respected Bowe's body of work becomes there will always have been potential to reach greater heights because he left a good 5 prime years on the table.

Same story with Moorer but I do not expect Moorer to have the renaissance. Because Holyfield's the only lineal champ from that era he fought and he won the trilogy he's launched to 2nd in the group without fighting anyone else. Moorer did not get that treatment. He was better than Holyfield and 90s Foreman and was a threat to Lennox but will never be considered as such.

 

He was destined for CTE, so I don’t see how his career could’ve been extended.

He was fortunate to have found his window in the early nineties. He probably would’ve been another Tyson victim if he’d come along in the late eighties or a Lewis victim if he gained relevance deeper into the 90s. He did most of what he was capable of, but could’ve fought better filler.

 

Futch believed he could have been one of the best HW ever. Futch got tired of the lack of dedication though. Probably got tired of Neuman as well ( can't blame Eddie for that). He should have definitely had a longer prime but some fighters just age faster regardless of their physical years. If Eddie stayed and Bowe had discipline I think he could have improved a bit more.

 

Protected fighters often get the benefit of a doubt, but you have to ask yoursel if they were protected because they just weren't as good as they're propped up to be.

I don't think Bowe faced a single ranked contender before he challenged Holy, and after that he met just a few at the lower end of the top 10. And then he got the crap beat out of him by one whose next best achievement was being robbed against Byrd according to some. He was probably on the slide then, but the simple fact is that his rep is to 90% built on the Holy fights, espcially the first.

Maybe those fights showed his level or maybe Holy was just well suited for him. If Norton, except for Ali, had faced nothing but former top contenders past their best and fighters that just briefly featured in the top 10 he'd probably look pretty damned stellar as well. But he also faced the Foremans of his day, Bowe didn't.

Had he faced Lewis, Tyson or even the level below - like Mercer, Ruddock, McCall, Bruno, Foreman, Holmes etc - even during just the half decade he operated at the top (never mind 15 years like Louis and Ali) we don't know what would have happened. We do know he generally didn't seem very keen on that level of opp,

 

It's not Bowe's fault that Mercer lost to Ferguson. Bowe-Mercer could have set off a different chain of events.

 

He was on the decline by 1994 when he fought Mathis Jr and Larry Donald. He looked sloppy and vulnerable against Hide. He looked good against Gonzalez but he was basically a punching bag for Bowe. By Holyfield 3 I thought he looked all but shot compared to 1992/93, even though he won. His punches were in slow motion and Holyfield landed at will.

I read on here Bowe liked to get hit in sparring, so I’m assuming that had something to do with his rapid decline.

Had he fought a few more 90s big names like Morrison, Moorer, McCall, Mercer, Bruno his resume would look so much better even without Lewis or Tyson.

Let’s not forget Bowe and Lewis were actually scheduled to fight in March of 1995 but Lewis lost to McCall is Sept 94.

Personally Bowe is a huge disappointment for me. I was a huge fan of his as a teen in the 90s. I was 12 for Holyfield 2, and still think Bowe won 34 years later. It still hurts watching Golota 2.

He was a top fighter in shape and in his prime. His off the ring antics during his career - in his dedication and purposely allowing himself to get hit in sparring costed his career.

 

Bowe was a dirty cheap shot artist. He had decent skills but when things got tough he got dirty. I never felt sorry for him when Golota used his family jewels as a punching bag.
