Just heard that Ray Lampkin passed away today at the age of 78. A solid age for an ex-fighter who had a scary time after that KO by Roberto Duran. Good fighter who fought both Duran and DeJesus. RIP champ.
A very nice fellow. I met him a couple of times at Jimmy Gooding's annual Veteran Boxing picnic at Jimmy's tree farm near Estacada, OR. A great fighter, but he was badly hurt in the Duran fight. The heat caught up with him and he was a sitting duck for the knock out round. Tragic really. I also saw him at a Tacoma GG tournament in which his son was competing.
I've got a piece of property out that way that I visit a couple times a year when I can get down there. I remember Jimmy used to have a breakfast in Lake Oswego, also, that I attended a couple times. Jimmy left us back in 08.
He is finally going to the Morgue over 50 years after Roberto Duran promished to send him there if they ever met again.
He really was badly hurt in the Duran fight and IMO, should have retired because he was damaged goods after that. He beat a couple of journeymen after that and the only names he fought was Vilomar Fernandez and Randy Shields, who both beat him. Fernandez decked him and Shields stopped him in 3. What Fernandez and Shields had in common was the fact that neither could crack an egg and they did that to a guy that went 12 rounds twice with DeJesus and into the 14th with Duran (in a bout I had scored Even at the time of stoppage). It was clear something cerebral was wrong there. Glad he retired and had a good life afterwards.
Hi Scart. Neat post, agree with all the above, I well remember seeing Duran climbing through the ropes for that fight and thinking he looked like the devil incarnate, the hair was stylishly long as befits the timeline, also the beard was somehow blacker than black, add the sharks eyes, and the toned bronzed body, he looked every inch the killer he was at LW, he seemed to arbour a extra hatred for Lamkin, over and above the norm, can't remember if there was beef, if Ray had badmouthed him, or not, but he looked like he wanted to kill Lampkin, as befits the famous after fight comment, about his hands being damaged, and were they not he would have sent Lampkin to the morgue, and not the hospital, and he probably meant every word, what a fighter he was, how soon we forget ! chat soon buddy, stay safe. Mike.
