Thats cause they were glorified club fighters. Baer was a physical specimen for his day which carried him a long way. Today he would be average height and lighter in weight. Galento was a really tough guy who had some power to a great exent because he greatly outwieghed his oppents and used his weight to generate power. Today he would only an average weight really short fat guy.
As the world population continues to increase the genetic talent pool expands making it more likely that a great athlete would emerge. Then you have advancements in training methods and technique. I believe by the eighties we were reaching level on par with today. The best technique probably hasn't improved since then and training has but a bit less then previous decades. The Crusiers and Heavyweigths would be more affected by training improvements that increase muscle mass and weight. The lower weight classes nullify that to some degree with the weight limits. You can only lower fat and increase muscle % so much before you reach a point of dimisishing returns. Thomas Hearns case in point. So lower weight classes may have flattened out talentwise since late 80s but the best heavys have improved though Lennox Lewis is still the greatest of all time and hes retired a few years now. Though you have increasing world population MMA has hurt boxing for the fan interest hence the draw to participate I believe is less. The lowering of the iron curtain has in the last 25 years or so given pro boxing a shot in the arm of talent. I know there are some really good fighters in classes below cruiserweight Eastern European and otherwise though I have not followed as closely in last few years anymore so can't speak to them. One mans opinion.
Roy's team will have to buy a shipment of bulk super glue from Alibaba to put his glass chin back together again.
Roy's speed confuses him for the first few rounds and makes him look bad but Joe eventually closes the distance, and starts tagging Roy, ending it before the 14th round
Think of some of the guys that had luck with Louis like Godoy and Conn that weren’t in Jones class athletically or skill wise. It would be walking a tightrope but I think he could keep from getting KOd and score enough to win a decision.
That's not the version of Jones were using though. If his chin was so bad it's unthinkable that it was a complete non issue for 14 years
Neither did Louis but he was still kayoed by Schmelling and dropped multiple times. On balance it seems like he's the one with the chin issues I don't see Jones getting dropped by Galento or stopped by Schmelling
If that was the case you should be able to point to issues when he was in his prime but you can't All these issues didn't surface until Jones was 35 plus
