great find. Mildenberger is one of Ali's more underrated opponents.

Mildenberger has that one round aberration loss to Richardson, but otherwise had a pretty solid record through to the Ali fight.

He seemed to have slipped a bit after that when he got some of the biggest fights of his career on paper; the tournament loss to Bonavena where he got caught early, and the non-performance against Cooper.

The Cooper loss is a bit of a blot on his record, as otherwise he is probably the top European heavy of the era. He had a better record than Cooper against American heavies, and beat a few of the top British heavies as well.

 

He was like Dimitrenko of his era.

The Cooper fight should've been a TKO win for Karl.

He clearly blasted Cooper in the eye with a hard left, Cooper grabbed him and fell into a clinch. When the ref separated them, Henry was bleeding from the same eye, and the ref called it a deliberate headbutt. And handed the fight to Cooper immediately.

It was nonsense. Karl's head wasn't even on the side of Cooper's body where the cut opened.

His powerful left hand shot was, though.

I just watched the fight again yesterday.

It was "home cooking" on the referee's part.

The film doesn't lie.

Karl was a very good heavyweight. Oscar Bonavena derailed him. But Oscar had nearly done the same to Frazier before that. Still, he couldn't stop Karl.

Quality fighter.

 

I didn't have the Mildenberger Overrated Pendulum Swing on the 2026 Bingo Card but I guess revisionists are running out of people to overrate.

 

Apparently he died about 8 years ago, so it is about time.

Mildenberger had home cooking in 2 fights against Folley and Machen,and Mildenberger only fought outside Germany twice.
"The sensation of the evening came in the interval to round seven, when the Bundes Deutscher Berufsboxer official, Gerhard Seewald, the appointed third man, had caught up with Machen's elbow when trying to part the boxers and fell backwards landing on his back. Helmut Bertram then took over the duties of third man on the grounds that Seewald was not fit enough to continue after his fall. Whatever the cause of this switch, Werner's decision saved the fight and the promotion. The crowd was not very pleased with Seewald's officiating up to this point. They had been calling for more action but whenever Machen went in close and proved superior at infighting, Seewald would pull him off.
