Who has the most versatile left hand in heavyweight history? Orthodox fighters only. Southpaws do not count. I think its between Ali, Foreman, Liston, Lewis and possibly Holmes. Holmes perhaps has the most versatile jab - speedy jab, powerful one, distracting one etc. But he was not much of a left hooker or a left uppercutter. Ali had a terrific blinding jab with power and speed to spare. He had a very underrated left hook (see Bugner 1 and Bonavena fights) and could also ocassionally throw a solid left uppercut. But he rarely used his left jab to the body or his left hook to the body. Lewis had a fantastic jab especially under Steward. Not as fast as the smaller guys but good speed and excellent power nonetheless. His left hook could ocassionally fire (like vs Bruno) but truth be told, his left hook was rarely a weapon vs duranle guys. Could throw a solid left uppercut sometimes. Liston had an outstanding jab and one of the great left hooks and he could vary it to the body or head. Don't recall him throwing a lot of left uppercuts but still ---- Foreman is my pick here. He had a strong jab, his left hook was underrated (see Frazier 2), his left uppercut is arguably the best in heavyweight history, he could vary this to the body or head, he rarely got countered with big rights when jabbing , he had pretty much everything with his left other than speed. He could control distance with it, set up powerful right hands with it, land devestating lefts to the body or head and vary left uppercuts and left hooks.
Wladimir Klitschko has to be up there. He could jab head and body, he could hook off of the jab, he could settle behind the a jab and win fights that way. There was a lot he could do with the left hand.
Joe Louis for me. Great jab, hook and uppercut. After that id have Holmes, Lewis, Cooney, Frazier, Foreman, Ali, Bowe , Wlad and Tyson
Another one believe it or not, I’m gonna say Mike Tyson. People will typically think of rangey lead hands with regard to this question, but Mike Tyson could jab on the from foot and did so effectively to set up attacks. He could jab to the body to set up that spring in left hook to catch them off guard, he could dig that left in to the body, he could follow up with the left uppercut. He could catch guys up close out the left (head or body) or when trading, he could set up opportunities from the outside (like jabbing to the head and body on the front foot) to create opportunities where he could spring in with the left hook. He made good use out of the lead with the physical attributes he had.
Evander Holyfield had literally every shot in the book. If we talking about heavyweight Holyfield and his left hand, then you could say that he in comparison to other heavyweight greats, didn’t have the best jab, the biggest left hook, the most devastating left uppercut or the most crippling left hook to the body but talking about overall versatility, his left hand has to be right up there with the best if not the best itself. His left whether as a jab, hook to the head and body or uppercut were individually all thrown with perfect form and was especially effective when thrown in the fast intense combination bursts that he excelled in. He would get my vote.
This. If you're talking "versatile" then he's my candidate for the GOAT. He virtually based his entire game off his left hand.
I agree 100%. Vlad's jab rightfully gets talked about a lot but he had a baby left hook that could decapitate. Offensively, he had more weapons than most.
Wlad. His left hand was as versatile as has ever been seen in the big boy division, probing, prodding, pounding, jab, hook off jab... a jab that could be a feeler or a straight anvil in your face.
Although I feel Joe Louis is the obvious and correct answer to this query, I will also add that Joe Frazier would come in 2nd in my book. Joe's hooks to body and head along with his upperct complimented his very underrated jab.
