I also seem to recall that the DAZN deal for Matchroom made them a company worth over a billion on paper so that hugely affected how the company could be traded etc Dont quote neon that but I certainly remember interviews stating similar This is what I mean by the extra incentives that came with signing with DAZN
Warren literally left TNT to join DAZN, i'm sure he could have stayed at TNT and i am sure at that point SKY would have definitely wanted him, and SKY and TNT would definitely sign promoters, as they have with ZUFA.
It’s a weird one because in the Netflix documentary I’m sure it was stated that darts is actually Matchroom’s biggest revenue stream by a distance, when that contract came up for renewal last year all the rumours were it going to DAZN, then Sky renewed.
Sky I think clearly wanted to always keep darts Whereas boxing there has 100 per been various conversations about whether to carry on I might be wrong but doesn't Barry still have final say on things like darts and snooker?
Because the money and budget were far greater Viewing figures all of a sudden became secondary Remember too Warren at that time was under the impression he would be part of what ended up as Zuffa so that will have played in to him signing too
Matchroom is compartmentalised by sports, there is a boxing department, a darts deparment and a snooker department, and then another department that covered fishing and pool etc, they all had their own boss, Frank Smith is actually the head of the boxing, Eddie is the chairman of Matchroom as a whole but the documentary portrayed him as only being interested in the boxing, Barry was stated as being semi retired and just in a advisory role.
It's their most profitable by a distance but it's predictable ongoing revenue. Snooker similar but lower. Boxing is lumpy revenue - if you look at Matchroom's accounts around the time of the Joshua-Ruiz rematch in Saudi, they had a massive bump from boxing, most of which went back out to the fighters anyway, so the revenue is just their slice of a huge number. Warren was featured in the Times this week as a high-growth company grossing £165m last year or something like that. Times pointed out that a lot of the money is just passing through and if that money passed through somewhere else, they might not be in such good nick. DAZN and Sky changed the game by guaranteeing long-term dates, though. In the past, promoters had to go bust if they got one wrong, whereas now their money is a lot more predictable. I think you can thank Matchroom for that, with the Sky deal and their model of showing fighters the revenue, so there's far less chance of things going tits-up like Warren vs Calzaghe.
That's one way of looking at it. The other is TNT didn't want to renew the contract and wanted to scale back their involvement with Boxing.
Highly possible as they have done nothing since Reports were that the offer available was exactly the same as previous deals which Warren had to accept previously as he was in a period of struggling
Did he say darts was there biggest turnover or profit? I can see it being there biggest profit because of the relatively low wages players are paid considering how big the sport is, especially around Christmas time. Don't think it even equates to 50% the money involved in matchroom boxing though
Do you know mate? I actually don’t know anyone else who pays for DAZN. According to an ex formation here is was single figures lol.
Ade Oladipo was hinting on his YouTube channel that he’s seen the DAZN schedule for the next few months and people are going to be very happy with it.
