Why Joe Frazier beats Marciano.

Rocky was a great of his time. He'd be tiny compared to even the heavy's of the late 70's. I'd take Ali, Frazier, Foreman all to beat him up.
Sizes matters - fighters have got bigger and stronger. The guys of the 70s who also went 15 rounds wouldn't fade across the distance and Rocky's punches wouldn't be as devastating.

 

It's a very reasonable synopsis.Frazier is quicker,has better head movement,and is around 20 lbs heavier.
Against that he is essentially a one handed puncher,whereas Marciano hit hard with either hand.

For the latter reason I usually give Marciano the edge,but,imo it's too close to get vehement about.

This ( for me ) is the most interesting, and absorbing match up amongst all the HWs down the ages, two fighters with an indomitable will to win, two fighters that were utterly convinced they were the better man, always ( at least before (TFOTC ) in great shape, it is hard for me to quantify, but I have trouble seeing Marciano being beaten, even by an adversary as great as Frazier, before any posters start, I am not a fan boy, far to old for all that nonsense, so I will go with a win for Rocky, don't know how, don't know when.

Because Joe Frazier H2H is better than Rocky Marciano; simple.
And because Joe Frazier is not Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Joe Walcott and Joe Louis (who should have retired).
Joe Frazier is a different kind of beast.
Maybe because of that, Joe Frazier has the most valuable win in 150 years of heavyweight division.

 

Marciano had the power in both hands Frazier in 1 hand - Frazier had a tough fight dropped 2 X by the 5"10 Bonavena. Short fighters have trouble with short fighters so would be interesting.
I see Marciano with the edge in 2 fisted powers, and it should start out fast. The Frazier of the FOTC was a beast and the best version of JF but went downhill possibly because of fame and lifestyle.

It would be a rough fight for 6-7 rounds much like Frazier- Quarry but Marciano found crafty fighters coming out of his catcher's stance and I believe Marciano would win the war of attrition by the 10th -11round - Marciano also had the one punch power he should vs Rex Layne and the double left hook he used against Moore and others.

Frazier went to the head and body well and both had heart and stamina - I see a war - quick or long but Joe Frazier respectfully said " only 2 men were better than me - Joe Louis and Marciano"
I see a tough fight - the hardest for both men - I just see the Marciano right hand being a factor

 

Frazier fought Oscar in his 11 th and 21st fights,would Marciano have done any better,at that stage of his career?

On a side note neither actually ko'd that many guys of note.Who was the best man Frazier put down for 10 Doug Jones?

 

At the time they beat them they were top contenders for the title - Frazier ko'd Mathis and stopped Quarry and Jimmy Ellis and also put Ali down very hard. JF was never the same after FOTC - Marciano beat Rex Layne (who was 34-1) and beat the man who beat him. They were calling him the next Dempsey and Marciano ruined him with a one punch KO. Walcott was still formidable crafty and pinpoint power - Charles was a year older than Marciano and fresh off a KO over Coley Wallace and Bob Sattfield and let's not forget Archie Moore.

 

Mathis was never a top contender,and he was on his feet when the fight was stopped, so was Quarry. Charles had nearly a100 fights on his clock,and had lost 2 of his last 4 fights.Wallace never beat anyone worth talking about ,and Satterfield was a chinny ,party animal.
Marciano ,following Goldman's orders, softened up Layne by concentrating on his soft mid section,before switching to the head.Goldman managed Brion who had fought Layne.Charley told Rocky " to go for his body Cesar couldn't do it, he didnt hit hard enough."
Walcott decided to stay down in the 2nd fight imo.

Moore was 41 according to his Mother.

 

Would be an amazing fight but I think Marciano wears him down and ends up getting the better of the inside fighting. Frazier coming in head first would eventually lead to his downfall. Prob not that late either. Early rounds prob go to Frazier but I think he’s tko by 9

 

Hard one to call but I see Joe's size being the tiebreaker. The Marciano right hand would always be a danger though.

 

I’m with you. I rate Marciano really high on my ATG list but have him losing a lot of H2H matchups because my list isn’t based on who’d win H2H, but this is absolutely not an unwinnable fight for Rocky.

 

I have to go with Frazier. I like Marciano, and actually consider myself a fan. But given relatively equal skillsets, the good big man will almost always beat the good little man.

Frazier would grind him down.
