Byrd's power ,or lack of it had no bearing on the result Vitali retired with an arm injury and you know it!

 

Size does matter or there wouldn't be divisions.. you can't escape the fact that Marciano is five foot ten and in shape is around 185 pounds.. Vitali isn't a big scrub he's an elite HW ... he's too much for Rocky.. there are SHWs that i think Rocky could take but Vitali isn't one of em..

 

I think Vitali would have dominated the match from start to finish. The Ukrainian had a huge advantage in reach, and he was much taller and bigger than Marciano. Rocky's pressure and determination could do nothing with the weapons at Vitali's disposal in my opinion. Marciano might have finished the match standing, but the judges' minimum score would have been 120-108.

You’re insulting older fighters as Vitali was stopped by a 37 year old and couldn’t stop a 38 year old Briggs. Older fighters are dangerous in their own way. Walcott was the champ, Moore was a beast who just got done clearing the division, and Louis was on a win streak. They were old but dangerous in their own way.
Quality matters. I meant a fighter in their first several fights depending on their amateur career and what they need doesn’t matter. Ten rounders are a better judgment as they’re the better pros.

Bird did not stop anything, stop talking crap. And Bird was a million times more skilled than Marciano.

Plenty of fighters had amateur careers similar to Rocky,few had the luxury of being coddled by a manager who was also the Matchmaker for MSG and a front for Frankie Carbo.

32-0-0 his opponent was 13-16-1
33-0-0 his opponent was 11 -14-2

I have read several accounts in various boxing magazines over my time following the sport, and the prevailing theme regarding the quality of Rocky's opponents during almost his entire journey, from the man himself was that they were vastly inferior, again from what I have read, Marciano pleaded with the duplisus Weil, to get him tougher opponents, he felt the public were being somewhat cheated out of their hard earned money with many of these fights, and confided with his brother Pete, that he would try to break his contract if Weil did not get him tougher opponents, mind you that would be harder than Marciano could imagine, as you rightly said, Weil had connections with very unsavoury characters, all in all, I have huge respect for Marciano, his overcoming of his height, short reach, very limited skills, at least in the beginning, his dedication to the sport, the way he conducted himself, despite his hunger for hurting his opponents, he had nothing but praise for the fallen foe, no profanities, no bad mouthing, he was an example to the younger generation, isn't that what we want in our sportsman, as for you being insulting, I have followed you and your posts avidly since I joined, and I have seem no trace of that, none at all.

I've no doubt Rocky would never duck an opponent ,I think he would be insulted if the idea was suggested

Vitali is a better boxer than Rocky, Vitali also has an iron chin,and has a fine judgement of distance, so explain to us how Marciano ,gives up 8 1/2 in in height,18 inches in reach , and 65lbs in weight,and still wins this matchup?

Now given these facts, how about you grace us with your strategy for Marciano winning this fight?

The strategy is doing what he always did. Staying low through crouch, countering jabs, out working him to slow him down, aggressively attack the body and break him down. He was exhausted against Lewis after a few rounds. He won’t be able to keep up a high pace for a long period of time. Had he fought Holyfield or Frazier I’d pick them as well for the same reasons. He had a nice career against truly unremarkable fighters. I do wish he got his rematch w Lewis to prove what he truly had in him. Vitali had horrible boxing skills compared to Moore, Charles, Louis, Walcott. His skills are nothing to brag about. His chin was phenomenal on the other hand.

 

Against Lewis, Vitali was fighting a 6' 5in near 250lbs man,thats rather different to fighting a guy you outweigh by 65lbs.
Beating on a188lbs ,past prime man is a bit different to doing it against a prime man over 60 pounds heavier than that, and one with a great set of whiskers".
