UFC 250 was one of the first MMA cards I've managed to sit through. While I greatly prefer the sport of boxing, I couldn't help but notice how much better the commentary was, especially compared to modern DAZN cards. More technical, less irrelevant rambling, less bias, better reactions, really better in every way. I often find myself wanting to mute boxing cards because the commentary is so bad. If UFC can do it on a smaller budget, why can't boxing? HBO and Showtime generally did a great job. It doesn't make sense.
Anything over the trash we get from DAZN and PBC. UFC commentary has its low points, and general issues, but its far better than what we get on a lot of big boxing cards right now. DC might be clearly rooting for Topuria, but he will still give a reasonable scorecard. PBC will tell you that a 116-112 fight was actually 111-117
I have muted so many boxing event cause the crews are so bad and most of time kissing ass or if its an ex boxer everything goes back to then and what they did. I don’t recall ever muting an MMA event.
I'd take Cormier and Rogan over a ton of modern boxing commentators for sure. Like not only because they're fighters, but also because you can tell they're very passionate about their jobs. Giving fair commentary and analysis about the fighters, and having memorable moments in the process. This content is protected
Most boxing commentary is just kissing one guys ass while ignoring anything the other guy does. It's shameful.
I think if Rogan were just a UFC commentator, I'd actually quite like the guy. He's obviously passionate about combat sports, and he loves his boxing as well. I agree with your points about boxing commentators. Barry Jones on DAZN is much better on podcasts than on commentary. I often mute his commentary, but I feel as though they're often treading on eggshells to avoid upsetting promoters and other fighters. It wouldn't surprise me if it was contractual, too. In the UFC, they can say whatever they want. What commentators do you think would dramatically improve the overall quality?
Ironically most MMA fans hate modern UFC commentary. Also how on earth is the UFC operating on a smaller budget? they have more money than every major boxing promotion combined lol. Rogan has to be the highest paid commentator in combat sports if not all sports.
Mauro has been heavily involved in MMA for decades as well. Hes actually generally well liked by MMA fans.
We don't want MMA d-bags commentating boxing matches. Joe Rogan is one of the worst ever. There have been good teams in the past like the old HBO crew and Paulie on showtime. They can build solid commentating teams without bringing in MMA commentators.
10 years ago that would have been a neat crossover. Now there's a ton of baggage that comes with MMA I don't think anyone really wants. Rogan especially has long transcended his job with the UFC. He probably just does it out of force of habit because he was doing it every month for years and years and he knows what he's doing the next five years. Boxing does not have that prescribed calendar. The big card is on whenever the big card is on. Even if you wanted the MMA people those people are used to a reliable time table that boxing just doesn't do.
To be honest, as a big combat sports fan, I've always thought boxing had the gold standard among commentators. That was especially true with HBO's crew. Larry, Jim, and Foreman/Roy. They were fantastic. Most MMA commentators suck. Rogan was okay. Cormier is solid. Rich Franklin in One Championship isn't bad. But there's no one that I would consider great or even really good. However, I think the two English speaking gentlemen doing commentary for Rajadamnern World Series muay thai are pretty damn good at their jobs, too. They're my current favorite out of active combat sports announcers.
If MMA commentators in general are anything like the idiots we get guesting on boxing shows, when someone like Ngannou turns up in boxing, definitely not. However going by the most recent Netflix events like Fury in April, the standard of US announcers is at an all-time low. Beyond that, someone needs to retire Kellerman again. Absolutely insufferable.
