Do you remember the talk about JCC fighting Terry Norris?

Oh yeah... I remember that. Even with Terry's shaky mandible that was likely a bridge too far for Julio, who was definitely on his way down at that point.

 

A fight that sounded interesting on paper but the weight disparity was too much. Norris would have been a nightmare for Chavez mainly due to his size and speed advantage. It's an unfair match up which would have been similar to Norris against Meldrick Taylor I would imagine. I recall there being talks of Terry Norris against Pernell Whitaker as well.

 

Norris would have been emaciated at 140. Like, Auschwitz victim level of strung-out. The lowest he ever got was 149 against Meldrick Taylor, and despite insisting on being able to make welter iirc, he was never especially keen to prove it. Regardless, Norris beats Julio without much trouble, despite being a much lesser fighter.

 

Yes, you even hear Ferdie Pacheco mention it on the commentary during his fight with Maurice Blocker, which was on the undercard of JCC-Haugen.

JCC was just too small and would lose pretty badly.

 

I would favor Norris but remind everyone that it didn't exactly take King Kong to hurt Norris. Pretty sure Chavez threw a more educated and stiffer right hand than Troy Waters. But JCC was just out of his element above 140 and by the time this fight was being discussed he had lost of zest for the grind. Some boozing and perhaps other substances started encroaching. The easy life was hard to resist.

 

No version of Chavez would ever beat Norris at 154. His combination of speed and power would be terrible for him this high in the weights. Chavez ain't stopping him, even given his weak chin.

 

I lean heavily towards Terry, BUT if the fight was at 147 Chavez definitely has a chance.

 

Norris would destroy Chavez at light-middle.

Julio had a great chin so he wouldn´t collapse early like Blocker but take a pounding till about the 8th.

At welter the result would be the same probably, maybe last a few more rounds or probably his corner calling it quits.

At light-welter, now things could really change here.

I´m pretty certain it was same day weigh-ins at that time, Norris would really struggle to make the weight and if he did, minimal time tor recover.

This weakness, his dodgy chin could lead to Chavez scoring a points win or even ko.

Though to be honest, had they fought Norris would probably just hit Chavez on the floor and get disqualified and then do the same in the rematch!

Norris would have lost on the scales at 140lbs and would have been too big at 154lbs, or any catchweight he can safely make, which by the 90's wouldn't have been much under 154lbs.

 

That fight being talked about never made any sense. There is no way that Chavez could compete with Norris, he was just too small. If he got into the ring at 154 he would be a tub of goo.
The first time that I saw Chavez, in person at a gym, was a huge letdown. After years of watching him and reading about JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ, I expected him to be 10 feet tall. I know he fought at 130, 135, 140 pounds but he was Chavez.
He is actually not very big at all, though he is much bigger than Azumah Nelson.
