If Mercer could put up a nice fight with Lennox he would definitely knock out Rocky. He wouldn't miss a chance like Walcott. And Mercer has a better chin than Rocky: Mount Rushmore of HW chins | Boxing News 24 Fan Forum
Is this the same Holy who was 4 inches taller, had 11" more reach and was30 pounds heavier than Marciano? The same guy who had impeccable balance, elite quicks and boxing skill? That's the guy you imagine Rocky copying? I want some of what you're smoking.
I believe it is relevant. Are they fighting 15 rounders? 12 rounds? Are they fighting on equal setting where each man gets to train in equal settings? I don’t consider weight a skill. You may. That’s fine. I don’t. I don’t think anyone in the 80s up was clean from PEDs. 70s was even dabbling. 60s up began using weights. It’s not a skill. It’s not part of the science of the sport. Just judging on weight class and styles is what I prefer. Based on skill level alone and fighting in an equal setting he beats both men. If you want to illegally give one a large advantage over the other then you’d have to put Mercer above many ATG HWs. Which is not realistic. I don’t think Ali would come in weighing 215 today or Louis 195. I don’t personally judge fights like a Time Machine. I judge on style, skill, chin, power, etc and assume they train on equal footing. If you want an opinion on pre steroids then anyone pre 80 is gonna have a disadvantage.
When he was 16? Marciano "Classy"? As in the Cockell fight where he struggled to finish a butterball no-hoper over 9 rounds? I'm assuming that was classy.
There was zero struggle in the fight. Only struggle was finishing him sooner. To Dons credit he gave it his all. Rocky also notoriously poorly trained for the bout being extremely not interested in the fight
So now you have moved the goal posts of my thread, and Marciano as he actually was is NOT fighting Mercer and Morrison as they actually were! RIDICULOUS! Nobody said weight was a skill, what logical posters are saying is ,size is a factor to be brought into account, which btw my opening post stated! Let me spell this out for you one last time. Since the 60's heavyweights have gotten bigger, along with that increase in size has come, more mobility, and more skill compared to the lumbering giants of the 30's and 40's,the Buddy Baer's,the Abe Simon's,the Carnera's and Impelletiere's. The precursor for this was Liston, only 6 ft 1 in, but 212lbs of muscle,he ushered in a new dawn to be followed by 6 ft 3in 212lbs Ali,Foreman,Holmes etc, these men were not only appreciably larger than their predecessors, they were more significantly skilled, and better coordinated, along with them came guys like----- Page,Witherspoon,Tucker,Tubbs,Biggs,Thomas,6ft 3 /5 men that could both punch and box. With the onset of these guys, light heavyweights as they were could no longer compete with the heavyweights.Guys like Harold Johnson,Joey Maxim,Harry Mathews,Doug Jones, had no realistic chance of beating the not only bigger, but more skilled modern heavyweight. So a trend evolved, light heavies ,small heavies ,if they wanted to challenge the big men added weight to their frames,to better absorb the punches from the heavier men and to be able to hold their own in the clinches, of course the success of this practice depended on their own body frames 6ft 2in+ light heavies and cruisers, like, Spinks,Haye,Usyk,Breidis,Adamek,Gomez,Ocasio, added weight to go after the bigger purses available at heavyweight. The point being, heavyweight boxing is totally different to what it was back in the 50's and before that. No185 lbs man will ever dominate the division again,he won't even compete in it,unless he adds muscle to his frame and has the necessary length of frame to accommodate that muscle , and here I'm not talking about natural short heavyweights like Tyson and Tua who couldn't make lhvy unless you sawed their legs off. You are in denial about this and always have been,to try and make a case for your short armed slugger you say well he beat a couple of crude , fat. unskilled oafs , as though this implies he would beat a skilled heavy hitting modern heavyweight with a good jab,and ring savvy.Your other ploy is the one you have resorted to here,it has two versions ,1.Marciano would be 220lbs today ,well,if he would ,he would be even slower than he was,and his stamina would be adversely affected. 2. Now this new one, back in Marciano's day these guys would be lighter, why is that? In closing you will never accept that the day of the 190lbs heavyweight is over, that Marciano would be facing dreadful handicaps in size today. You contend that Marciano's tiny reach and lack of height would actually be an advantage for him against modern heavies, totally ignoring the fact that these men would be able to hit him before he got anywhere into range with his own punches, totally ignoring the fact that older past prime men made a mess of his face with their jabs. You will never concede the logic of these points ,so there is no profit for me in further debate with you .
Marciano wasnt," poorly trained ,"for the fight, and his tactics were absolutely filthy, not content with getting a fat Don in a16 ft ring,he butted him, hit him low, on the break, and whilst he was on the floor and never even got a warning for it! Cockell who had been stopped by middleweight Turpin, and Lhvy Slade, went 9 rds and finished on his feet."my best punches didn't seem to affect him",Marciano.
Hi Buddy. I seriously question your knowledge of boxing with the statement Rocky was " notoriously, poorly trained " even his worst detractors, and there are plenty on the forum, personally I can't fathom out why, would concede his was one of the fittest, well conditioned boxers that ever entered the ring, so that alone signals to me, your either trolling, or have been affected by the heat wave, that said you are entitled to any opinion you want, that's the ethos of the forum. stay safe GP, chat soon buddy. Mike.
Rocky wasn’t at his best for this fight and you know he didn’t take him seriously. It’s in most biographies. He didn’t lose a round in this fight and I find it odd you guys pick this fight to try and knock Rocky down a peg. Not like he was getting whooped by unranked Otto or Vanhensing.
