I got this when it first came out over a decade ago. Very very pro Liston. Definitely take some things with a grain of salt but TBH I did like it. I heard his sequel is bat s--t crazy though.
Gallender is a ****ing nut. Knowing I'm an actual P.I., he hired me to dig into Liston's family history, including tracking down the date of his mother's death. If the money hadn't been substantial, I'd have told him to kick rocks. One of the strangest people I've ever met in my life.
Although there are a lot of useful information in this, the narrative is like a big, not very well documented, conspiracy theory.
Any time someone dares to go against the "Ali is the greatest" narrative, they are met with criticism and skepticism. I always believed those fights with Liston were fixed.

Not quite Rockford—not an ex-con and my living situation is considerably less dramatic. But yes, I'm a PI. I primarily work missing persons, genealogy research (which is what brought Gallender to my doorstep), and homicide investigations.
I haven't even gotten to the fights ... in threfirst half Liston is framed as the most misunderstood athlete in history. Her portrays him as far more empathetic, had many undocumented visits to kids in hospitals, ect ... was victim far more then antagonist ....on and on .... I guess who knows but zero is documented ..
So more like Magnum PI? (I first read this as Gallagher and thought you investigated the guy who smashes melons … or his twin brother, hence the need for the genealogy — for those who aren’t aware, Gallagher was a hot comedy act smashing melons and such with a sledgehammer as part of his act; he had a twin, so figured why not double-book himself and make twice the money working in two places at once? Then iirc they had a massive falling out. Hey, you should investigate i!)
Some of us drink our Coke out of the glass bottles...So we're just a little bit too sophisticated to believe in these fables. But I do like reading them too.
