How would you rate the Hagler-Duran fight?

There was action, but it was more one sided, especially down the stretch, than many remember, but for Duran to move up 25lbs in weight divisions and take on one of the widely regarded greatest at that weight, go the distance and win rounds is still impressive.

 

I was expecting fireworks and hard punching but instead got a sparring session. A very low score of 3

 

How do you score it. Out and out action was low, skills were elite, historical importance was enormous in the wash up, the matchup wasn't mouth watering going in, many thought it a mismatch. This of course wasn't the case tho Duran's successes for me are overstated while still remaining eye-opening and brilliant.

Overall a 7.5/10, maybe an 8. Everything depends on the criteria.

Only watched the fight once, never felt the urge to revisit, no abiding thoughts or memory's, so on that basis around 5 ish, it should have been a 9/10 when you consider the quality and reputations of both fighters.

Overall probably 8. Duran showed guts and skill, while Hagler showed his poor ring IQ. He goes back to his corner after a few rounds asking "How is he landing that right hand on me?" The Petronellis say "He's timing you Marvin." It's a good thing Hagler was tough because he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. That 11th round he was basically dancing around doing nothing. There are levels to anything and Duran was indeed a level above Hagler, so was Leonard.

Hagler underperformed .. Marvin's only true weakness as a fighter was on occasion between the ears when matched up against big in major match ups ... Vito 1, Duran and Leonard .. for some reason he held back enough to let men he should have dominated into bouts tht came far closer than they should have been ... his whole psych , the "Marvelous" thing, plays to a guy trying to hype himself up .. the only time he seemed to go balls to the wall in a monster fight was against Hearns, a man who should and would have been his toughest opponent of all with his size , speed and power but who Marvin jumped on and never let get set .. I love Duran but he had no business being competitive w Hagler at 32 at 160. Marvin showed him and going the distance (15) too much respect and Duran made a fight of iot ... I never felt it was that close and Duran never came close o hurting Hagler but he made the event by going the distance and performing repeatable shocking everyone ..

 

8. I can see a case for Duran winning it, if you watch very closely he won a lot of the very cagey rounds, of which there were a lot. Hagler won the ‘fight’ but Duran may have won more rounds and could by all means have been given the decision.

 

Marvin underperformed.

Duran overperformed.

That's it in a nutshell.

 

Hagler landed over a hundred more punches, landed the most jabs, landed the harder punches and took the last three rounds clean.. Duran made the event by surviving . He survived because Marvin held back and gave him way too much respect . All that said the fight wasn't that close.

 

Perfect assessment, JT. I gave it a 7 in the poll but considered giving it an 8 - I’d say 7.5 is just right. It was one of those matchups that was always absorbing, even when not that much was happening action-wise.

 

Hagler was battering a tired Duran in the last 3 rounds but the early rounds were Duran, Hagler didn’t know what to do with him and Durans right hand was landing plenty. He shaded a lot of the slow rounds just by getting in a couple of those right hands.
That said it’s a fight I need to rewatch and score again
