Last I checked there was no rule against it. It takes time to recover and install a mouth guard, and it's not something you can do while your opponent is trying to punch you.

Mike Tyson had a resume comparable to any Usyk opponent by 1987. I've never heard anyone claim he was great by that stage and should have retired because he had nothing left to prove.

All I've argued is that Usyk victims failed to leave strong legacies and are unlikely to go down as great. Not Usyks fault but it is what it is.

 

He's 39 years old and established himself as one of the best pound for pound fighters ever. It's reasonable to say at this point of his life, "I've had enough".

Only if there is a break in the action. If the fighter is beating his opponent up and has him hurt, referees tend to let the action go. As they should.

The idea that the ref should knowingly restart the action after a knockdown with no mouthguard is insane.

 

How is he historically significant? If anyone with a rating and a quality win or two is historically significant than he would qualify but that seems like a very low bar.
