Just watched video of him winning a tournament staged by Don king in early nineties a bit like prizefighter but more competitors. Tony looked a fantastic boxer..slick skills and superb defence..he looked hard to hit and although he wasnt a big puncher he was more skilked than i realised....overall he must really have wasted his talent.
Tubbs is probably best known for going all the way to Japan to get KO'D by Tyson in one round back in the 80s..
Tubbs was an Über talent. Tough, fast hands, slick and real ring savvy. Personal issues and the buffet line were his undoing.
Tubbs at his best was a tough cookie. He had absurdly fast hands when you consider the shape of his body.
Tubbs had skill. He was tricky. His best win was greg page who beat him a lot of times in the amateurs and bonecrusher smith, two guys most of the post 1984 contenders could beat. Joe bugner, Marvis Frazier you name them. Of course Tony took witherspoon pretty close but Tim tested for smoking pot at camp.. Then later Tony took Bowe pretty close in a step up fight that Tubbs was able to keep freindly and josh his way into keeping the rounds close. No doubt about it Tony was skilfull but I just think all in all ironically Greg page pre 1984 was a better fighter and so were most of the rest of the best.
We called him the Uncrowned King. He routinely skirts my top Ten heavy all time list. If he had had a few breaks, we would be building statues of the man on every Main Street.
Elroy...repect everyones opinion but cant place tubbs effort against A1 prime Tyson higger than Tyrell Biggs..who outboxed tyson for most of a round and showed more courage..Tubbs had a surprising ammount of skill...his defence impressed me..perhaps should have kept tyson busy for longer ??
This content is protected I watched this Peoples choice tournament last night on youtube,Its got quite a cast.Tony looked magnificent to be fair,Bit of a Canzoneri tribute act at times Thought he ran Witherspoon close too in a close fight, Did Odell Hadley train anyone else in the pro ranks?
