But to answer the question about a Wilder fight

Why not?

The guy has 0 restrictions or obligations now

He can fight anyone he chooses to

 

Lots of money.

 

He only avoided 2 mandatories. Wardley and Kabayel. Gassiev and Sanchez weren't mandatories.

Sorry but if anybody else had pulled this they would have been called out on it,so,I’m calling it. What you mean is that Usyk is no longer holding the belts hostage and the Division now that he has vacated them ! Infact Usyk made a deal with the WBC to hold onto his belt if he was allowed an exemption to fight Verhoeven,the deal was that he had to fight Kabayel next. Usyk has the Verhoeven fight,looks terrible but finishes the fight convincingly and then goes back on his word and drops the belt ! You mention 39 as a relevant excuse,Foreman became a Champion for the second time at the age of 45 and did not lose the Lineal Title until he was 48 years old with his loss to Briggs .

 

Foreman held two Belts WBA IBF and the Lineal Title,he was stripped of the WBC belt March 95 for not fighting Tucker and then vacated the IBF Title June 95 to avoid the rematch with Schulz. The Lineal Title went to Briggs when he beat Foreman on points Nov 97. This is the espn article I read that names the mandatorys and both Gassiev and Sanchez are named .

So you just confirmed what I've said about Foreman. Dropped the remaining belts and continued fighting. BTW. Foreman didn't have the WBC belt.

Gassiev and Sanchez weren't named mandatories by the sanctioning bodies. They were just next in line to be called that.

 

Ok we will agree to disagree,the espn article says as such, it doesn’t matter anyway Usyk dropped those belts to get out of those fights,you can also see I did mention it was the WBA belt not WBC belt that Foreman was stripped of,not easy typing away on a phone,my bad . Usyk was also ordered twice by the WBO to fight Parker,that’s another mandatory avoided .

He will be 40 and is coming off the worst performance of his career. He has done everything you can do in the sport and did it the hard way. If he wants to fight Wilder and then hang them up he has earned that privilege in my opinion. I think he knows his ability has dipped due to father time and fighting Kabayel is not in the cards for him. He has always wanted to fight Wilder and if its his last fight then go for it and retire after. Wilder is always going to be dangerous every second of every round so it will always be an interesting fight even if you dont agree with it. Put a good undercard together and make it a great event as a whole and ill be happy to watch.

I see both sides to this.

I have been very critical of Usyk since the end of Fury 2. Up until December 2024, Usyk conducted himself well. Yes, he was only fighting once or twice a year but he was taking on the best challenges.

Its Fury who wasted a year of Usyk's career (and other heavyweights careers) by delaying that fight over and over.

Usyk's conduct since Jan 2025 hasn't been great. Giving Dubois a rematch rather than Parker (to be fair Dubois is still a credible defense), then calling out Chisora and Joshua 3 (insanity), taking a year off and fighting a kickboxer.

Usyk did a similar thing in holding up the division for a year and wasting precious time for heavyweights.

Not good. But i can also see the argument that he is 39, has quite a few miles on the clock. and no longer has the motivation to fight young hungry lions. Fair enough. A 20+ year career is a long time and at some point, your body will demand an easier work load.

We don't want to see Usyk take unnecessary punishment at this stage in his life and end up with CTE. He has done enough to be the best of his era. His legacy is secure.

I am glad he dropped his belts, and while that doesn't make up for wasting a year of other fighters careers, at least we now have a new era.

I just hope the Saudi's can get us a unification fight. Its a coincidence that Turki and the Saudi's entered boxing. Otherwise, Usyk vs Fury would have never been made.

 

I really have no issue with older former champs fighting each other on the Senior Circuit, which make no mistake, is what this is (and what Usyk wants).

Wilder did look like he might still have a little left in his last outing so maybe this gets interesting. His power seemed back. I recall him landing some shots which Chisra blocked which nonetheless knocked Chisora back. And Wilder’s heart was never in question, he’s a warrior and will keep going until someone stops it or he’s knocked unconscious.

Bring it.

 

Unless boxing fans can actually unify and boycott not just this fight, but all unnecessary fights, nothing will ever change.

The marination of fights and mismatches are infuriating.

As long as there are enough mugs willing to watch we will continue to get these pointless fights
