Favourite Boxing Magazines in the old days

@Jamal Perkins, I have about 10 years or so of 1950s - 1960s UK's Boxing News for Sale, near enough 400 - 500 issues... if that interests you.

in fact I have more than just that, 1950's Ring Mags, Annual Record Books, some miscellaneous other mags, record books and such.

anyone interested?

 

Ring. I don't remember any other magazine on the topic of martial arts.
I remember to this day Rob Kaman was the headliner in "Ring".

I liked Ko' match ups of champs from different ears and their forecast of bouts to come.always found it interesting to see how accurate they were in the next months issue.

 

The new Ring is now silly money £10 and contains adverts for the owners I bought a couple issues and decided the content did not justify the price.

 

I went to High School with Leo Loucks, a World Kick Boxing Champion in the 1980s, he was pretty darn good too, a tough guy, though a gentle & decent person outside of the Ring.

He was our Student Body President for a year, maybe two, at Sir Wilfred Laurier High School in London, Ontario, Canada, in the 1970s.

Have you heard of him Ikra, some of his fights are on YouTube.

 

I haven't heard of him, and I haven't seen Rob Kaman until today. I dug it out from under the dust of memory from the period of the middle or the beginning of the second half of the 80s.

Not sure of the year, prob late 60s/ early 70s, my parents took us to visit my cousins in Basildon, it was being built at that stage, and one of my cousins had bought the latest Ring, on the front cover was the heading " The title fight that shook the World " and the picture in colour was of the Johnson / Jeffries fight, Jack with his hands on hips, looking extremely fit and strong, think he had an American flag as sort of belt, Jordan attired in a three piece suit, had his right arm raised, and then there stood Jeffries, he looked truly invincible, the thinning hair aside, he had the sturdiest legs known to man, a forest of hair on his formidable chest, hands wrapped, with scant tape to secure, the only slight giveaway to the enormous task that lie ahead, was the prematully lined forehead, and he looked years older than 34, the scornful Corbett was standing just behind Jim, clothed in suit trousers, braces, and hair slicked in place, that for me was what the Ring was about back in them days, some truly iconic pictures, thanks for joining me on my trip down memory lane.

If the Ring is still doing commemorative tribute issues on historic fighters as they were a few years ago, they’re worth it.

I got the Larry Holmes one and there was some terrific new material looking back at various aspects of Larry’s career. Still keep it fairly handy so I can pick it up from time to time — it’s gotten me through some long flights for sure.
