I was actually at this one!!! The fight occurred at the old DC convention center. Me and a friend of mine were laughing when Rock pulled Tillman over the ropes! I can still see his feet going out of the ring! lol...
Finally remembered a 10th round oddity. An obscure fight from the 70s between Paul Ferreri and Sid Vicera. The 10th and final round begins and Ferreri meets Vicera with the traditional touching of the gloves signifying the last round. Well, Vicera ignores the tradition and hauls off and belts Ferreri, dropping him to the canvas - one report said out cold. Of course he was immediately DQ'd.
I think it’s round 4 when FMJ got tired of Victor Ortiz hugging him and apologizing for a blatant head butt and wins by KTFO.
Good one. Just added. Ortiz later complained that the ref, Cortez didn't say 'box', but he did say 'OK, let's go'. Semantics, it meant the same thing, so Ortiz' whining was very thin there. I thought it was dirty by Mayweather at the time too, but it is what it is. It's like the old Jack Dempsey line when Jack Sharkey turned to the ref and Dempsey KO'd him. When asked why he hit him when he was turning away, Dempsey said, "What was I supposed to do? Write him a letter."
2 for the price of one, 10 & 14 ; Ref Goldstein and Sugar Ray respectively, succumbing to the heat in 1952. Another for a 6th was Danny Williams kayoing Mark Potter with a left hook, having dislocated his right shoulder in the 3rd for the British heavy title in 2000.
The dude had hugged it out forever and wanted to kiss and make up some more. Ortiz committed a flagrant, intentional foul. He doesn’t then get to carry on endlessly with his ‘apologies.’ Touch gloves, nod, fight.
Another ninth round one, and topical. Fury doing an involuntary impersonation of Willard 107 years ago, today. Careering around the ring, as Usyk battered him from one side of the ring to the other.
Really good comparison, Crix, but really nothing other-worldy bizarre or unusual. Let's give a good think for that missing 15th round.
This one has me baffled. We may have to throw in the towel and stop this project on its stool after 14 with a ‘no one will ever forget what you did here today.’
Not sure if this is bizarre enough to count, but it was the weirdest round-fifteen happening I could think of. I've included the video below for you to judge for yourself. Shoji Oguma vs. Chan-hee Park, third bout, about twenty seconds left. Park sticks his head between Oguma's legs and tries to hold on, so Oguma responds by banging on Park's back like a bongo drum. Park then walks over to his corner and sticks his head outside the ropes, as though he intends to walk out on the fight. Rudy Ortega has to tell him to get back to boxing. All this in the final seconds of a very close contest (it went down as a majority decision). This content is protected
Clum, it really didn't seem too 'over-the-top' to mention as bizarre. More rowdy than anything else. However, your mention of Oguma did spark a memory. His second fight with Betulio Gonzalez ended up a bit crazy when the decision was announced. They brought in a trophy to be awarded to the winner and when it was Oguma, Gonzalez went nuts. He ran over and kicked the trophy (if one sees the trophy when it was brought into the ring and eventually when Oguma hoists it, one can see the top missing) and had to be physically restrained by his cornermen until he angrily storms out of the ring. I remember one of the magazines at the time stating, "If Gonzalez shown that much fire during the contest as he showed afterwards he may have won." I don't ever think I've seen a fighter this PO'd at losing a decision. Check it out. Go to the 55:00 mark, which is about where the trophy enters the ring before the decision is announced.
