If Ray Mercer gets the decision over Lennox Lewis

He did not, and there was no reason to give the decision to Mercer. Not even american judges did it.

 

It was arguably a draw. not a win for either side.

It would change nothing. Lewis lost before.

 

Lewis would bounce back as per usual, and Mercer would lose to Ross Purrity or something in his next fight.

 

Lewis would be held in far less regard. He wouldn't ever be considered for top 5 status.

That Mercer decision saved his historical reputation, but also his display of infighting skill as well

 

It would affect his career path as Lennox would lose his #1 ranking by WBC. He'd also get his 2nd loss in less than 2 years.

However, Lennox is a great fighter and he would bounce back soon. Like Wlad did after 2 bad losses in just 13 months. So he'd become a title challenger somewhere around 1998 and eventually win the title.

 

You could be right but he had two losses to similar quality foes. Assuming he lost to Mercer and didn't get a rematch I agree with you but if he were to win a rematch, especially by KO, I don't think his long term reputation and all-time rating would have been hurt too much.

 

I still shake my head when this fight is mentioned. I remember everyone at work who saw it over the weekend felt like I did

Uh, no! I don't think Mercer got a single card in our scoring thread and quite a few had it clear for Lewis. I've never understood the fuss.

If Mercer gets the decision he loses shortly after, while Lewis rebounds strongly.

 

This. Lewis would very likely rematch him and outbox him comprehensively.

 

Maybe Trump can get the decision reversed. It seems that he has some power - in sports at least.
