Prime Roy Jones jr vs Joe Louis

Guys smaller, slower, and far less powerful than Louis caught Jones, Jr., including Del Valle, Tarver, and Glen Johnson. Jones was a phenomenal middleweight and super middleweight, and very good light heavyweight, but never a top cruiser or heavyweight.

 

Joe got the good stuff, he'll make it.

 

Probably all were faster than Louis. And it's not exactly like they caught Roy with bombs.
And Tarver does not count, he faced a past prime Roy.

Jones was never was top cruiser of heavyweight cause he went up in weight at the end of his prime, when he was getting old, and cause he fought in the modern era, where boxers are much much better than they were in Louis's era.
Greatness wise, Louis is 1st or 2nd all time, due to what he did in his era, but he'd get beaten to a pulp by modern boxers.

 

Nah, he's way too slow.

Where is Roid? He needs to get back in the ring and show Trout and Byrd how it's really done.

 

Please define modern - when does it start (year and/or decade please) and which skillsets, specifically, are a demonstration of this so called modern?

I ask because Jofre, Arguello, Canto, Sanchez, Duran, Napoles, Pep, Hagler, Wilder, Chisora, Ruiz, Rahman can all be called modern depending on which criteria one chooses to use.

 

I gotta admit, I could watch him getting knocked out again.

In which weight classes?

Which skillsets did the guys from the 1970s (let's just stick with HW for this one) start suddenly showing that the likes of Louis, Patterson, Charles, Frazier, Liston, Ali etc. didn't possess?

 

I was referring more to the lower weight classes than the HWs.
Frazier and Ali were from the 70s. But they had many limitations. Frazier only had 1 good punching arm. And Ali was not very skilled, he relied on his physsical assets.
Liston was very technical and he's in my top 10 all time at HW.
Louis was too slow in terms of feet movement.
Patterson and Charles are smaller, so they moved better than most HWs.
And you just have to look at the footage and you can easily see someone like Tyson, Holyfield, Holmes, Witherspoon etc moved better and were more skilled than Marciano or Terrell.

 

Well lets look at one decade against the 70s

It seems to me the old timers compare pretty favourably to the guys from the 70's.
Where specifically do you see the modern lighter guys being superior ?
Defence? Offence? Infighting?Jabbing?

 

I say this as courteously as I can - I think you may genuinely lack appreciation for skill and stylistic nuance.

How you can look at Ali's jab, right hand lead and footwork and say he was not very skilled and he relied on his physical talents makes me question how you analyse and interpret skill.

Joe Louis' feet didn't look slow against Max Baer - his feet did what he needed them to do; he walked men onto his devastating punches. Louis wasn't Dempsey, Frazier, Foreman, Ali or Tyson with the footwork yet he was a more skilled and a complete fighter than virtually any ATG at his weightclass.

As for lighter weights - please show me the numerous fighters that eclipse Wilde, Langford, Pep, Sugar Ray Robinson, Gavilan, Armstrong, Jofre, Charles, Moore, Saddler, Walker, Ike Williams, Napoles etc.

It probably looks a little like Conn/Louis. Eventually Joe will catch Roy on his chin and it's lights out by round 8 or 9.
