That's not true. There were multiple threads about this fight on this very group, and the consensus is that the fight was a draw or Lewis edged it.

Likely due to hindsight of what Lewis became in retrospect

The crowd at MSG booed the decision

Even if it is due to hindsight, your statement is just not true.

It was very close fight. I only do these scenarios when I feel one guy clearly won but wasn't given it.

Mercer gets catapulted into the Mike Tyson sweepstakes as a very dangerous opponent.

I originally thought it was a draw or could've gone either way. But it's true that many felt Mercer had won.

For me it depends on the planetary alignment on certain days when re-watching over the years to determine a winner. Some days it's Lewis and the other days Mercer.

    Think Tyson fights Holyfield anyways

Mercer in no way won 6 rounds. Americans doing what they always do and being biased against none Americans. Same reason Holyfield got a gift over Lennox and Sharkey got a gift against Schmelling

That's drawing an awful long bow.

Crowd often boo when the underdog puts up a good fight and loses. Who was the home country fighter?

I meant to link this earlier. I'm pretty sure Mercer didn't get a single card.

My card was 96-95 Lewis. Or 5-4-1 in rounds but can't remember the exact RBR.

Yes he does. Tyson-Holyfield gets made first, no matter what. Tyson-Mercer would've been made after had Tyson unified the belts. Holyfield (and almost Foreman) was in the Pinklon Thomas slot of the one defense Tyson makes after gaining two belts before unifying since Mike was superstitious and wanted to follow the template from the first HBO unification tournament.

I think Mercer beating Lewis might get him a much anticipated fight with Bowe first with both fighting for HBO. Or perhaps Mercer faces Witherspoon like he ended up doing anyways.

Would think Mercer is going straight McCall for the WBC. The fight with Lewis was an eliminator

Was it? I can't remember. Thanks for clearing it up. I do remember Bowe-Lewis was the original match but something happened.

    Lewis Vs Mercer (1996)

    Round 1 Lewis
Round 2 Draw (could have gone either way)
    Round 3 Lewis
    Round 4 Lewis
    Round 5 Lewis
    Round 6 Mercer
    Round 7 Mercer
    Round 8 Mercer (close round)
    Round 9 Draw
    Round 10 Lewis

    5-3 (2)
Lewis was more active and threw more punches. Mercer landed big hard punches. I could see the case for a draw if you gave Mercer rounds 2 and 9 and score it 5-5 I wouldn't have a problem with that or give Round 2 to Lewis and score it 6-4.
