Cotto vs Winky Wright

Wright was bigger, a natural super welterweight who could also fight at middleweight, while Cotto physically left something to his opponents at super welterweight and middleweight. At welterweight the Puerto Rican fhad to work hard to beat Clottey, who was a solid boxer and very good at defending. Wright was bigger than Clottey, had one of the best defenses in history, and had a strong jab that controlled the tempo and distance. In this match I see Cotto pressuring Wright and landing a lot of punches, many of which would have broken through Winky's guard. Winky would have interrupted the Miguel's rhythm with his jab, often doubled, and ultimately landed the most accurate and heavy punches of the match. Wright clearly on points.

 

Winky. I don't see how Cotto can win.

 

Massive Cotto fan here but he would have to be consoled nuzzled in Melissa’s melones after the fight where he barely wins an exchange.

 

Winky would win easily

 

Wright would dominate Cotto at 154. Cotto wouldn't be able to establish his jab or land his left hook much. And his bouncing around in suboptimal position to punch means Wright would time him pretty frequently and control him with the right jab. Awful matchup.

 

Winky without question. Outside of Bud and possibly Canelo...maybe this version of Fundora, there isnt a JMW in 20 years that beats Winky. If GGG makes JMW he wins. Fundora is a toss-up because he's willing to fight inside and Winky eats him up there. Canelo at 154 had fast hands and combos and was great to the body. I like Bud in a very close fight.

Winky would've beaten Floyd BTW and Floyd and team knew that which is why they moved on.

 

Okay, maybe I'm crazy, but let's take recent Wright H2H's where I slightly favoured him over Oscar because I thought he'd have cleaner and more effective shots and Oscar would be doing a lot of ineffective flurrying at 154 and above. I actually do think Cotto matches up better with Wright despite giving away a natural size. I think the way in which Cotto moves and throws punches is going to work better against Wright. That's just a hunch. ...Anyway, despite reasoning that out, I think the closeness of the Clottey fight probably tells us more about how a Wright match would go, as Wright is a bigger and better practitioner of some of the same defensive preferences. Oh, well. Wright, solid favourite but still a chance that Cotto's going to actually finagle a decision out of it. Sometimes the size advantage in strength and durability becomes a disadvantage in terms targeting the smaller man and that might actually happen, despite Cotto's defense being just good enough that the main critique is that it's 'leaky.' It's good enough to be good and not good enough to be slick. But, yes, that might still be enough.

 

It's hard to even say Crawford and Canelo because both have struggled against lesser fighters. If Lara had Canelo on **** street and Crawford was getting peppered by Brooks jab, it's kinda hard to imagine them doing well against Winky who is Favored over the likes of Benitez, Floyd...etc

 

Fair assessment. I think people forget just how special cotto really was. Its not his fault that Margaritto wore cement wraps and Cotto had the bad luck of competing against prime Floyd and Manny. Cotto would've had more success in this era tbh

 

Winky easily wins. He matched up well against almost every style. This is not even taking into account that winky is the bigger man.

 

Lesser fighters? Floyd lost JLC1 and drew against Maidana - both are lesser fighters than Winky Wright.

Bradley clearly beat JMM yet JMM and Manny were evenly matched over 4 fights despite Manny dominating Bradley.

MAB, Morales, Manny had the same triangular effect as did SRL, Duran, Hearns as did Ali, Frazier, Foreman.

Winky Wright fights absolutely nothing like Lara, Floyd, Bud, or GGG. Winky's style has no clear advantages over Canelo - none.

Floyd could try to pick and move versus Winky like he did Baldomir, but larger pressure fighters concerned Floyd (Winky, Margarito, etc.).

I think Bud was opportunistic enough to get to Winky

 

Winky was bigger than Canelo, and a great southpaw, with a great jab.

That would have been a bad stylistic match up for Canelo, and especially a pre-prime version.

Floyd ran his mouth off against Winky, then backed down.

 

You're extremely overeating Crawford. Im not even sure he beats Jermaine, Hoskins, Mosley, or Tito at 154 tbh
